Stanley Yelnats' family has a history of bad luck, so when a miscarriage of justice sends him to Camp Green Lake Juvenile Detention Centre (which isn't green and doesn't have a lake), he is not surprised.
Every day he and the other inmates are told to dig a hole, five feet wide by five feet deep, reporting anything they find. The evil warden claims that it is character building, but this is a lie, and Stanley must dig up the truth.
Wonderfully inventive, compelling and hilarious, Louis Sachar has created a masterpiece.

"Holes is one of those instant classics that adults, as well as children over eight, will thoroughly enjoy. Sachar has created something quite different from JK Rowling or Philip Pullman, but no less enchanting." (Independent on Sunday)
"If you want a witty, moving listen that grabs you and never lets up, look no further than Holes." (The Daily Telegraph)
Mum to two pirates, partner to an urban cowboy.
From the 10 year old: The plot was great and I liked the character's names.
From the 10 year old: (warning this is a spoiler!) Probably the scene when Stanley found Zero under the old boat!
From the 10 year old: (another spolier!)The bit when the warden was asked by the Insurer about why she didn't release Stanley earlier.
This is a brilliant story, which really comes to life in this audio reading. Good for adults to listen to, as well as older children.
