Don’t get this book

My god this is one of the worst stories I’ve ever endured. The main character is a useless, whiny girl, who continuously pines for a guy who actively distances himself from her, and treats her like garbage for the first half of the book. She is stalker level obsessed with him- and I understand that they’re connected and all, but listening to a teenage girl yearn for a boy who is that disgustingly awful to her is like needles to my ears. She has NO other character traits except her fascination with this boy, and her fear of shadows that show up from time to time. She doesn’t treat almost any of the female characters with respect or interest, except to use them for personal gain or to hate them for being anywhere near the boy who seemingly hates her. I can ONLY imagine people under the age of 14 liking this book. The entire plot revolves around an obsessive teenage crush, and I just can’t believe that anyone with actual life experience would find any of the qualities of this love story endearing.

Didn't fall in love with this book

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The book was so slow & barely gave anything away. The big reveal is left till right at the end with to many unanswered questions.

Would you be willing to try another book from Lauren Kate? Why or why not?

The story was written well but didn't have any big moments scattered throughout to keep me interested. If I was bored I may pick up the next instalment.

Any additional comments?

Needed mini cliff hangers scattered through out to keep you really interested. At the start reminded me of a better written version of Twilight. Didn't really like any of the characters to care enough to be invested in what happened to them. Justine Eyre did a good job as narrator.

Not for young adults or adults

unless you're 15 or under, you won't enjoy this book. Good book for young teens. But otherwise too juvenile.

Shocking Narrator

The narrator ruined it for me. Hoping for a new one for the rest of the series. I’ve read these many times and this woman has ruined it for me. She’s amazing at describing the scene, setting and character development but that’s where it drops. She fails to tap into each characters personality when speaking on their behalf. She fails so show Cams smart arse, flirty tone. She failed to show Roland’s mysterious tone and completely failed Luce as ms Daniel. A great narrator should ensure they capture the characters through tone, speech, volume, humour, anger, sarcasm… Arriane is described as this crazy, tenacious and loyalty. Hopefully my review changes by the second.
