Publisher's Summary

Tim Booth is shocked when his first emergency callout for someone short of breath turns out to be an adult man with a blocked nose. Far from beginner's luck, this turns out to be an omen for the rest of his paramedic career.

Between the obligatory stories of objects lodged in body cavities and grown men who can't look after themselves when their wives are away, Tim finds that the promised life-saving moments are far outweighed by the trivial, frustrating and bizarre ambulance callouts. He and his colleagues battle fatigue, abuse and burnout - treated with coffee, occasional moments of heroism, and a healthy dose of dark humour.

Told with cutting wit, pathos and disarming insight, You Called an Ambulance for What? is a comedic behind-the-sirens look at the challenges, absurdities and shocking reality of life as an Australian intensive care paramedic.

A brief look behind the Ambo Doors

I really enjoyed this book, and having it read to me by the author made it just that little bit more enjoyable.
I laughed at way to many spots and commiserated with him in just as many.
I would gladly listen to many more stories like this from those in the front lines of danger, whether it be from bullets or the old Nona who knew better then to climb that ladder.

Enjoyed the stories

Well done! I really enjoyed listening to this book. I can relate to the stories as my son is a paramedic and he tells similar stories. I just wish people use the Ambulance service for emergency and not trivial complaints.

Very enjoyable, especially for Health Care Workers

I loved this read. I had many laughs hearing some of the stories as I found them very relatable (I’m an Emergency RN and have my degree in paramedicine) thanks so much Tim for shedding some light on very real issues within this field. I really hope the general public realises this soon. Thanks again.

Great read but a bit judgemental

Having worked in healthcare, I totally understand where you’re coming from about the area and healthcare cards and the way people use them many times when it’s not needed. I worked very near to your area and the amount of people I saw come in an ambulance because they had an appointment and didn’t want to catch the bus was unbelievable and such a waste of resources. I was always amazed by the dedication of the ambos to keep bringing them in when they knew exactly what was going on. What I didn’t like, however, was the judgement of people who didn’t want to have the vaccine and automatically labelling them anti-vaxers. There are many people that chose not to have the vaccine for medical reasons, and as we can see now a lot of people did suffer side-effects and a great deal of the people who refused the vaccine would’ve been among them so chose to protect themselves from harm, weather real or imagined. The same government also said we didn’t need a mask for a respiratory virus because they actually didn’t have any, no wonder people didn’t trust them about the vaccine. They did tell a straight out lie so they didn’t have to admit that they couldn’t provide the masks. Having said that the book was well written and I enjoyed the story.
