Dorothy pieces together reconnaissance photographs with thousands of holiday snapshots of France - including those of her own family's summer home - in order to create accurate maps of Normandy. Maps that Wyatt will turn into naval bombardment plans. As the two spend concentrated time together in the pressure cooker of war, their deepening friendship threatens to turn to love.

Publisher's Summary
Lt. Mellie Blake is looking forward to beginning her training as a flight nurse. She is not looking forward to writing a letter to a man she’s never met - even if it is anonymous and part of a morale-building program. Lt. Tom MacGilliver, an officer stationed in North Africa, welcomes the idea of an anonymous correspondence - he’s been trying to escape his infamous name for years.
As their letters crisscross the Atlantic, Tom and Mellie develop a unique friendship despite not knowing the other’s true identity. When both are transferred to Algeria, the two are poised to meet face-to-face for the first time. Will they overcome their fears and reveal who they are? Or will their future be held hostage by their pasts?
Combining a flair for romance with excellent research and attention to detail, Sarah Sundin vividly brings to life the perilous challenges of WWII aviation, nursing - and true love.

One of the best love stories I’ve read so far
This was definitely one of the best, sweetest love stories I’ve read thus far - made all the better for its Christian element. A story of two army officers brought together via an anonymous pen-pal program, which allows them both the freedom to be themselves. Mellie Blake, a shy, awkward, 1/4 Filipino nurse who has never been able to make friends due to her heritage and family history; and Tom McGilliver, an engineer who is the son and namesake of an infamous murderer. These two lonely young people are given a chance to make a real friendship without the pressure of pretense, and this deep connection quickly develops into romance. Mellie quickly learns who Tom is which only makes her love him more, all the while Tom finds himself falling for Mellie and Annie (her anonymous pen-pal name) at the same time. In an effort to remain loyal to Annie, he goes to great lengths to avoid Mellie, which has her convinced not to reveal her identity to him for fear of rejection. By the time the truth is revealed, they’ve both developed into stronger and more courageous people, and have won the respect of their COs and fellow officers.
I was hardly able to stop listening to this book, and finished it almost in one sitting. At times I found myself a little frustrated with Mellie over her extreme shyness and total obliviousness, but as someone with severe anxiety I also found this relatable in a way. I also loved that this book explored the concept of falling in love with someone’s heart and character before falling in love with them physically - something that I think is severely overlooked in both literature and society as a whole. It made for a more genuine relationship with a deeper level of trust than a lot of the superfluous and unrealistic relationships in many romance novels.
All in all a beautifully written and thoroughly enjoyable read. Definitely recommend this!
