Story
The modern practice of medicine and psychology grew out of the ancient Greek healing tradition, said to be founded by Asklepios, god of healing and dreams. For two thousand years the system spread all over the Mediterranean world and planted the roots of Western medicine and psychology by offering ritual and holistic practices that recognized that healing begins at the soul level. Yet, since that time, the spiritually based practices were cast aside, leaving behind only the scientific medical techniques that dominate health care today.

That they couldn't have PTSD, because they were not in direct combat? That they didn't "deserve" to have PTSD, or didn't "deserve" to get better? The answer hit a nerve with Cruse: no one had taken the time to explain PTSD to service members in a way that made sense.

War Is a Racket is Marine General Smedley Butler's classic treatise on why wars are conducted, who profits from them, and who pays the price. Few people are as qualified as General Butler to advance the argument encapsulated in his book's sensational title. When War Is a Racket was first published in 1935, Butler was the most decorated American soldier of his time. He had led several successful military operations in the Caribbean and in Central America, as well as in Europe during the First World War.

Thich Nhat Hanh acknowledges that because suffering can feel so bad, we try to run away from it or cover it up by consuming. We find something to eat or turn on the television. But unless we’re able to face our suffering, we can’t be present and available to life, and happiness will continue to elude us.

Publisher's Summary
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder increasingly afflicts veterans of modern warfare. The RAND Corporation has reported that it affects almost 20 percent of military service members who have returned from Iraq or Afghanistan. Tragically, PTSD impacts all aspects of life. Some vets can’t hold jobs or sustain relationships. Others have recurrent nightmares or won’t leave home. To begin healing, says Edward Tick, we must see PTSD as a disorder of identity itself. War’s violence can cause the very soul to flee and be lost for life.
Drawing on history and mythology, Dr. Tick reveals the universal dimensions of veterans’ soul wounding. He uses methods from ancient Greek, Native American, Vietnamese, and other traditions to restore the soul so that the veteran can, at last, truly return home.
Ed Tick, Ph.D., clinical psychotherapist, is honored for his groundbreaking work in the spiritual, holistic, and community-based healing of veterans and other survivors of severe violence who suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. He has worked with wounded warriors at major US Department of Defense and Veteran Administration facilities and at universities and hospitals around the world.
Critic Reviews
