Bougainville profite d'une mission royale aux Malouines pour réaliser son projet de tour du monde dont le but est surtout de découvrir de nouvelles terres dans le Pacifique. Entré par le détroit de Magellan, il aborde Tahiti, dont il décrit la population, avant de rejoindre les Moluques par la Nouvelle-Guinée, puis s'arrête à Batavia, gagne l'Océan Indien par le détroit de la Sonde, rejoint l'Ile Maurice puis le Cap en Afrique du Sud avant de regagner la France.Commencé fin 1766, cette circumnavigation se termine en mars 1769. Il est le premier français à accomplir officiellement un tour du Monde. La riche documentation recueillie par les scientifiques qui l'accompagnent justifierait, à elle seule, cette aventure. Les observations de Bougainville à propos des "sauvages" polynésiens firent beaucoup pour la prise de conscience des européens sur la nature et la sociabilité des peuples appelés "primitifs".
