Som Christian IV‘s yndlingsdatter synes hendes liv fra begyndelsen at være forudbestemt til stor rigdom og lykke. Men ægteskabet med rigsgreve Corfitz Ulfeldt forandre hendes fremtid. Da Ulfeldt bliver anklaget for landsforræderi, vælger hun at stå ham bi. Af den grund tilbringer hun næsten 22 år i fangenskab i Blåtårn på Københavns Slot, inden hun i 1685 bliver løsladt. Niels Aage Barfoeds biografiske roman fortæller om denne enestående kvinde, hendes stenfaste troskab og enorme hengivenhed til sin mand og den lykke, det kostede hende. Niels Aage Barfoed (1899-1973) var en dansk præst og forfatter, der skrev en lang række biografiske romaner om historiske danskere heriblandt Poul Henningsen, Leonora Christina Ulfeldt, biskop Hans Adolf Brorson og Steen Steensen Blicher. Niels Aage Barfoed stod desuden bag flere noveller og romaner.
