Camino Dreaming
- By Anonymous User on 06-02-2022
Publisher's Summary
"I’d never done anything crazy like this before–a pilgrimage walk. I was not a hiker, and I wasn’t a Catholic. In fact, I wasn’t even sure I was a Christian. On the last government census when I had to state my religion, I'd said I was a Buddhist, mainly because they’ve had such a hard time in Tibet I felt they needed my statistical support.
I was also not an adventure traveller. For me, adventure travel was flying coach. All this backpacking and wearing of heavy boots and flying off to France to walk ancient pilgrimage routes was a new experience, and not one that made me feel entirely comfortable."
And so Bill Bennett, an Australian based film director, set off on an 800 kilometre walk across Spain to Santiago de Compostela, not sure why he was doing it, and not feeling entirely comfortable. His discomfort increased markedly a few days later when his knee gave out–so the rest of the walk was a “pain management pilgrimage.”
But he kept his sense of humor, and his memoir is at times hilarious, but also deeply moving and insightful. In the vein of Bill Bryson and Eric Newby, The Way, My Way takes you on a unique spiritual journey, and gives you a hearty laugh along the way.

Absolutely Fantastic
Thoroughly enjoyable and highly recommended for anyone who wants to walk the Camino or for anyone who just wants to reminisce. I have read lots of books on the Camino, both before my first Camino 10-years ago and quite a few afterwards, and I thought this was just terrific. Bill’s memoir was written in a typical self-deprecating style of an Australian, which resonated with me. I found I could identify with him every step of the way and could easily picture the journey and the thoughts and conversations he had with himself! I cannot wait to see his movie in May 2024. It did take me awhile to get used to Sara’s narration, especially with her North American accent, but she did a great job

Good story, inappropriate narrator
While I enjoyed the story, and it took me back to my first camino Frances, I thought the choice of an American woman to narrate the story of an almost 60 year old Aussie was misguided. Almost made me return the book before listening to the first chapter. I persevered though and enjoyed the story.

OMG amazing.
I’ve walked the Camino and this sums up so much of what you feel. The humour the lessons you learn. His experiences matched mine and I did it 10 years later. Listening to this as an Aussie was like a trip down memory lane. Just amazing.
