Story
In the grotesque bell-ringer Quasimodo, Victor Hugo created one of the most vivid characters in classic fiction. Quasimodo's doomed love for the beautiful gypsy girl Esmeralda is an example of the traditional love theme of beauty and the beast. Yet, set against the massive background of Notre Dame de Paris and interwoven with the sacred and secular life of medieval France, it takes on a larger perspective.

Story
Les Misérables is set in Paris after the French Revolution. In the sewers and backstreets, we encounter "the wolf-like tread of crime", and assassination for a few sous is all in a day's work. We weep with the unlucky and heart-broken Fantine, and we exult with the heroic revolutionaries of the barricades; but above all we thrill to the steadfast courage and nobility of soul of ex-convict Jean Valjean, always in danger from the relentless pursuit of the diabolical Inspector Javert.

In an 18th-century England of wit, womanising and powdered wigs, provincial Philip Jettan runs the risk of irreproachability. Cleone Charteris stands in no such danger. So Philip leaves for Paris, where his father's hopes and his lover's ideals are realised, but with unforeseen consequences for them both.... A peerlessly successful and prolific romantic novelist, Georgette Heyer shows in Powder and Patch what won her a wide, devoted audience that continues to this day.

Publisher's Summary
At the dawn of the French Revolution, the men, women, and children of Paris have one hope to escape the guillotine: the masked and mysterious Scarlet Pimpernel. But who is this daring swordsman and quick-thinking master of disguise? London’s privileged, self-obsessed Sir Percy Blakeney.
When his estranged wife, Marguerite, falls prey to French envoy Chauvelin’s blackmail, she unwittingly exposes the Pimpernel and imperils the covert league he commands.
Set amid the Reign of Terror, Baroness Orczy’s thrilling romantic adventure of loyalty and revenge introduced a new brand of hero - a righteous champion with a secret identity - who would influence every masked vigilante to follow.

A Classic Classic
This is the second “classic” I have listened to. Perfectly read by Michael page. It was so good to listen to this book as I drive along on a all day road trip; even my daughter turned off her phone and listened to a good ol’ fashion story.

Best audiobook and book in general so far
I'm often a bit hesitant with classic books as they can be stiff or boring and just not quite hold up so well with time. They are often still enjoyable but a little out of place perhaps. This however holds up better than any classic book I've come across yet. It's exciting and fun with its moments of comedy and possibly one of the most enjoyable romances I've read in a while. Having it read by Michael page (who also reads the lies of lock lamora series, which I also recommend) perfects it. Having listened to the gentleman bastard series first I think helps lend a vibe of the daring roguish charm and grit of the gentleman bastard series and perhaps is part of why I felt it still holds up well in modern times.
Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Absolutely recommend.
Particularly to any fan of the lies of locke lamora, the Lord of the Rings, and even perhaps Terry pratchett, Neil gaimen or Diana wynne Jones fans.
A story that truly has a little something for everyone.

Wonderful classic
Fantastic performance by Michael Page as he brought the story alive. "The Scarlet Pimpernel" is a story of adventure, intrigue and a touch of romance. Love this classic as the sense of history feels so alive thanks to Baroness Orczy.
