Story
As a third-year Harvard Medical student doing a clinical rotation in surgery, Ronald Epstein watched an experienced surgeon fail to notice his patient's kidney turning an ominous shade of blue. In that same rotation, Epstein was awestruck by another surgeon's ability to slow down and shift between autopilot and intentionality. The difference between these two doctors left a lasting impression on Epstein and set the stage for his life's work - to identify the qualities and habits that distinguish masterful doctors from those who are merely competent.

Story
Why a book on health care? Our systems have long been broken, even before the Covid-19 pandemic hit. The great progress in medicine is just not affordable any longer. Widespread frustration prevails and finger pointing in a silo-mentality are dominating the public narrative on the matter. Why have we missed the train of digitalization and value-based principles in health care? Any other industry has long recognized that customer focus is the holy grail to success. But, in health care, why have we so terribly lost focus on our ultimate customer - the patient?

Publisher's Summary
Random House presents the unabridged downloadable audiobook edition of The Power of Meaning by Emily Esfahani Smith, read by Mozhan Marno.
There is a myth in our culture that to find meaning, you have to travel to a distant monastery or wade through dusty volumes to figure out life's great secret. The truth is there are untapped sources of meaning all around us: right here, right now. Drawing on the latest research in positive psychology; on insights from George Eliot, Viktor Frankl, Aristotle, the Buddha and other great minds, Emily Esfahani Smith identifies four pillars upon which meaning rests: belonging, purpose, storytelling and transcendence.
She also explores how we can begin to build a culture of meaning into our families, our workplaces and our communities.
Inspiring and full of contemporary examples, The Power of Meaning will strike a profound chord in anyone seeking a richer, more satisfying life.

Truly fantastic book, very highly recommended
I decided to listen to this book after hearing Emily Esfehani Smith's TED talk and wanting to know more about the four pillars of meaning. The book delivers so much in terms of thought-provoking ideas, fascinating research, compelling stories of real individuals' experiences and practical ideas to apply to one's own life to cultivate more meaning. It was so refreshing after being inundated by the 'cult of happiness' in so many other books. Plus, the narrator has a soothing, sensitive voice that is just a joy to listen to.
A genuine life-changer.

This book is factual and well referenced throughout, providing so much more than just a 'self help' book.
