No one should live day-to-day just to exist. It only took an invite from a person I’ve never met to a place I didn’t know existed to tempt me to walk…no, run away from everything I knew. How sad is it when I’m the last one to see that my crappy life needs a do-over? Starting over in my midlife wasn’t exactly the plan. But with the discovery that I actually have an aunt I never knew existed, magic is real, humans can turn into animals, and there might even be a real freaking dragon living in Guardian Lake—I can’t help but hope there has to be a better life waiting for me.

Story
I was only 14 when the government took me away from my family. My gift is rare and precious, I know. I can read your mind, and I can do other things to you too. Do you want to try? They said that they would help me to improve, and they did. Now, I no longer need them. I got out of hand, so they fear me. And they should. Tessa is a regular girl, except that she sees things that are far away. She agrees to go on a critical mission that puts to the test not only her special abilities, but also her loyalty to the service, and her love for a young woman whose secrets she is yet to unravel.
Publisher's Summary
"Mystical, magical, and wildly original.... If Alice Hoffman and Sara Addison Allen had a witchy love child, she would be Paige Crutcher. Do not miss this beautifully realized debut!" (JT Ellison, New York Times best-selling author of Her Dark Lies)
A deeper magic. A stronger curse. A family lost...and found.
Persephone May has been alone her entire life. Abandoned as an infant and dragged through the foster care system, she wants nothing more than to belong somewhere. To someone. However, Persephone is as strange as she is lonely. Unexplainable things happen when she’s around - changes in weather, inanimate objects taking flight - and those who seek to bring her into their family quickly cast her out. To cope, she never gets attached, never makes friends. And she certainly never dates. Working odd jobs and always keeping her suitcases half-packed, Persephone is used to moving around, leaving one town for another when curiosity over her eccentric behavior inevitably draws unwanted attention.
After an accidental and very public display of power, Persephone knows it’s time to move on once again. It’s lucky, then, when she receives an email from the one friend she’s managed to keep, inviting her to the elusive Wile Isle. The timing couldn’t be more perfect. However, upon arrival, Persephone quickly discovers that Wile is no ordinary island. In fact, it just might hold the very things she’s been searching for her entire life.
Answers. Family. Home.
And some things she did not want. Like 100-year-old curses and an even older family feud. With the clock running out, love might be the magic that saves them all.

Poor narration, too fast and wrong emphasis
Couldn't get into this story due to the narrator, the storyline seemed interesting but awful to listen to. With so many excellent narrators you would think they would try to replicate those who tell a story well.

Not for me
This book was recommended to me by a search engine based on another book I’d read. I didn’t make it to the end, not sure if it was the narrator, story or something else but I kept zoning out. This rarely happens and I normally enjoy audiobooks - there wasn’t enough there to keep me listening.
