Story
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

Story
Cassie Prince lives in a beautiful beach suburb with her successful husband Jon and their children Ellie and Danny. Life is perfect, right? Except now she's reached her mid-forties, she can't help wondering what happened to the fun-loving, sexy and accomplished woman she used to be. This isn't what was promised. She's panicking about ageing, bored in her marriage, exhausted by her demanding kids, and increasingly torn by news of her sick mother back in England. So Cassie does what she's always done - buries her feelings and ignores her problems (and does some more online shopping).

Publisher's Summary
Eight ordinary people. One extraordinary choice.
It seems like just another morning.
Around the world, people wake up, check the news, open the front door.
On every doorstep is a box. Inside that box is the exact number of years that person has left to live.
Whether they open it or hide it under their bed, each person must learn to live in this new world: a couple who thought they didn’t have to rush their life together, a doctor who cannot save himself from his own fate, best friends whose dreams are forever entwined, and a politician whose box becomes the powder keg that ultimately changes everything…
Enchanting and deeply uplifting, The Measure is a sweeping, ambitious and invigorating story about family, friendship, hope and destiny that encourages us to live life to the fullest.
Critic Reviews
"The Measure is a fantastic first outing for Nikki Erlick. […] It’s a timely, page-turning triumph and I can’t recommend it enough." (LoveReading)
"Perfect for book clubs, Erlick's The Measure is equal parts charming and thought-provoking. It takes a philosophical question – what if everybody on earth knew exactly how long they had left to live? – and explores, with compassion and pragmatism, how the implications would trickle down into every area of modern life, from politics to intimacy." (Marie Claire)
"The Measure is utterly original and wonderfully mysterious. Through Erlick's deft prose and clever logic, I threw away all disbelief and fully plunged into the unsettling but life-affirming world she creates." (Jessica Anya Blau, author of Mary Jane)

Thought provoking
Clever to follow the different stories of people and their outcomes, with a few surprises. At first I was not completely taken by it but then it started getting interesting and hooked me. Glad I read it.

Easy to read, hard to put down
Really made me think...would I open my box? would I live like I had a short string? Isn't that what I should be doing anyway?
Narrator did a great job, changing her voice for the different characters...just enough to help me follow the story better without being cringy.
Will be recommending this one to friends.

Beautiful theme
A very thought provoking theme, especially since Covid. The first few chapters really gets you digging in. Then it just seemed to drag on a bit too long. Too many thoughts/details every step of the way.

Great premise - got me thinking
Seriously fab read - post Covid was interesting to reflect on the responses from different people. Heaps of real life parallels. It didn’t matter that it left questions unanswered. This is a must read
