Story
Katarina Ashowan was not made for courtly life. Sure, her father is the famous house witch of Daxaria so she was raised among majestic castles, proper manners, and royal expectations. But Kat is also a mutated witch whose power aligns predominantly with fire. She’s more comfortable riding horses or learning to fight than she is making polite conversation and wearing fancy dresses. Which is why her upcoming assignment—serving her best friend, Alina, the soon-to-be crowned Troivackian queen—is anything but ideal.

Publisher's Summary
The Lord of Stariel is dead. Long live the Lord of Stariel. Whoever that is.
Everyone knows who the magical estate will choose for its next ruler. Or do they? Will it be the lord’s eldest son, who he despised? His favourite nephew, with the strongest magical land-sense? His scandalous daughter, who ran away from home years ago to study illusion?
Hetta knows it won’t be her, and she’s glad of it. Returning home for her father’s funeral, all Hetta has to do is survive the family drama and avoid entanglements with irritatingly attractive local men until the Choosing. Then she can leave. But whoever Stariel chooses will have bigger problems than eccentric relatives to deal with.
Winged, beautifully deadly problems.
For the first time in centuries, the fae are returning to the Mortal Realm, and only the Lord of Stariel can keep the estate safe. In theory.
The Lord of Stariel is the first book in the Stariel quartet.

Lovely world building, storyline with unpredictable twists and excitement and a gorgeous relationship unfolding. The delicate smouldering heat between them is very well paced! This book was a nice surprise.
Well written light fantasy, with many interesting realistic characters and charming, but not overbearing romantic subplot.
The narration was very good too.

Love it!
This is one of my favorite book series! I've read it before but being able to listen to it on audio book was great while I'm home with my new baby - sometimes I don't like audio books because the narrator annoys me but in this instance the narrator was excellent. A fun story set in a fantasy/steampunk world with interesting characters and (most importantly) a satisfying ending. This series gets even better as it continues - book three is my favorite and I'm looking forward to number four!

Beautiful
This is a review for the full series up to A Rake of his own TBR. Wonderful unique fae story with the gentle feel of Gaslamp genre. There’s enough action and tension amongst the story to keep you riveted, but it’s overall a story about characters. What really stands out is how well crafted and unique each character’s voice is. The humour is spot on, feeling natural rather the forced. Tiny bit of steam, gorgeous developing romance, PERFECT

A Magical Mystery with Romance and Action.
I love the world in The Lord of Stariel with interesting characters that all have secrets. A hard turn from what I was expecting set the scene for a grand scale to unfold. Where many books continue predictably this one did not. A good Balance of Action and Romance whilst setting the scene for greater tales to emerge. Finty Williams fits the book perfectly and has done an amazing performance.

Enjoyed it
Iv'e never heard of this author before, but decided to give the book a go anyway. I love discovering new writers, and I'm so glad I listened to this book.
The story was pretty solid, but what I liked most about this book were the prose and excellent writing. It felt like a mystery, set in a fantasy world, with fae and magic, but with an interesting twist.
The narrator did a fantastic job. I liked her voice, and delivery. Overall, it was a great listening experience, and I'm looking forwards to seeing where the story goes in the following books.
