Story
When Crispin, Lord Cavratt, thoroughly and scandalously kisses a serving woman in the garden of a country inn, he assumes the encounter will be of no consequence. But he couldn’t be more mistaken - the maid is not only a lady of birth, she’s the niece of a very large, exceptionally angry gentleman, who claims Crispin has compromised his niece beyond redemption. The dismayed young lord has no choice but to marry Miss Catherine Thorndale, who lacks both money and refinement and assumes all men are as vicious as her guardian uncle.

Story
In the eyes of London Society, Gillian Phelps is suitable enough. Though the ton whispers about her change of residence, any speculation remains just that: ballroom gossip. No one—not even the other Huntresses, the group of ladies she calls her dearest friends—knows that she is harboring a devastating family secret. Gillian has become adept at hiding the reality of her circumstances, but the close quarters of a house party will test her ability to conceal the crushing truth. And with so many people to deceive, the late arrival of another guest is a most unwelcome surprise.

Publisher's Summary
Elizabeth Black is the headmistress of a girls' school in 1830s Victorian London. She is also a well-respected author of stories written both for and about the upper-class ladies of Victorian society. But by night, she writes very different kinds of stories - the Penny Dreadfuls that are all the rage among the working-class men. Under the pseudonym Charles King, Elizabeth has written about dashing heroes fighting supernatural threats, intelligent detectives solving grisly murders, and dangerous outlaws romancing helpless women. They contain all the adventure and mystery that her real life lacks.
Fletcher Walker began life as a street urchin, but is now the most successful author in the Penny Dreadful market, that is until Charles King started taking all of his readers. No one knows who King is, including Fletcher's fellow members of the Dread Penny Society, a fraternity of authors dedicated to secretly fighting for the social and political causes of their working-class readers. The group knows King could be an asset with his obvious monetary success, or he could be the group's undoing as King's readership continues to cut into their profits.
Determined to find the elusive Mr. King, Fletcher approaches Miss Black. As a fellow author, she is well known among the high-class writers; perhaps she could be persuaded to make some inquiries as to Mr. King's whereabouts? Elizabeth agrees to help Fletcher, if only to insure her secret identity is never discovered. What neither author anticipated was the instant attraction, even though their social positions dictate the impossibility of a relationship.
For the first time, Elizabeth experiences the thrill of a cat-and-mouse adventure reminiscent of one of her own novels as she tries to throw Fletcher off her scent. But the more time they spend together, the more she loses her heart. Its upper-class against working-class, author against author, where readers, reputations, and romance are all on the line.

loved it
the narrator did an excellent job reading this book giving each character their own voice.
I loved that although it was a love story it wasn't the soppy kind but had spark and humor, and even though we get two POVs it isn't the "shr thinks/he thinks" buisness that drives my crazy with other books.

An excellent jaunty love story
I was captivated so much by this cool little tale full of jaunty men and brave incredible women. They ended up so intertwined in their adventures that it was destined for them to full in love. No angst or constant enmity between characters or angry dominating men and women swearing and yelling thru a so-called love story. NO!
This was a beautifully written tale of an attempted courtship whilst going on an adventurous journey looking for the truth and the bad guys! Sounds spectacular to me! Thank you 😊
ps. One thing; it might help if the narrator learnt a few more male voices it did ruin a few parts when the men all sounded like each other. Sorry 😞 but I have an ear for these things and picked it up.

Interesting
I recommend listening to this during some dedicated quite time with your eyes closed as opposed to buzzing about multitasking with this audio in the background. Otherwise, you’ll find yourself a little lost, as the story interchanges between the writings of the authors and the story itself. I was too distracted with what I was trying to accomplish during the day that I don’t think I gave this the time and attention it deserved to immerse myself in the story and truly enjoy it as others have. Will revisit with proper attention in 6 months to see if my opinion fares better.

All over the place
I’m afraid I just couldn’t get into this book at all. One chapter would be the “story” the next chapter would be a whole different made up story.. I just found it too confusing
