Publisher's Summary

Winner of the Southern Schools Book Award 2019

Link is a fish out of water. Newly arrived from America, he is finding it hard to settle into the venerable and prestigious Osney School. Who knew there could be so many strange traditions to understand? And what kind of school ranks its students by how fast they can run round the school quad - however ancient that quad may be? When Link runs the slowest time in years, he immediately becomes the butt of every school joke. And some students are determined to make his life more miserable than others . . .

When a school summer trip is offered, Link can think of nothing worse than spending voluntary time with his worst tormentors. But when his parents say he can only leave Osney School - forever - if he goes on the trip, Link decides to endure it for the ultimate prize. But this particular trip will require a very special sort of endurance. The saying goes 'No man is an island' - but what if on that island is a group of teenagers, none of whom particularly like each other? When oppressive heat, hunger and thirst start to bite, everyone's true colours will be revealed. Let the battle commence . . .

I had a great time!

** spoiler alert ** Well there are a lot of extremely articulate reviews on this book. It seems to have come under some serious scrutiny and a lot of people seem to dislike it a lot. I personally really enjoyed it. I'm giving it 4 stars because it was highly unrealistic in this day and age to have an entire school be so involved in bullying one particular child and for not a single adult to stand up to the boys aid. Also, the reasoning behind the existence of The Island also seemed...somewhat of a stretch. However, I read books to escape reality and I love the fantasy and sci-fi genres so I really don't mind pushing the boundaries of reality for a good story. I definitely had a great time with this one. There were a couple of "WOAH" moments, some good, some bad. The way the main character reacts is pretty bad once he gets a bit of power but then, that was kind of the whole point. To show that he could now understand the bullies point of view of what it means to have power but to also show that he could learn from his mistakes and rise from the stooped level he lowered himself to for that same power. There were many lessons to learn but all in all, I think the plot was intriguing, the environment was vivid, the characters were dynamic, the dialogue amusing/shocking, the ending was... a stretch but satisfying enough I could deal with it and I also enjoyed not only the narration from listening to this book but how the story was formatted. Seeing as this is my first M.A Bennet book, I am going to try another of her books, S.T.A.G.S next and looking forward to it.
