There, to her shock, Yeine is named one of the potential heirs to the king. But the throne of the Hundred Thousand Kingdoms is not easily won, and Yeine is thrust into a vicious power struggle with a pair of cousins she never knew she had. As she fights for her life, she draws ever closer to the secrets of her mother's death and her family's bloody history.

But it's not just mortals who have secrets worth hiding and Yeine will learn how perilous the world can be when love and hate - and gods and mortals - are bound inseparably.

The Inheritance Trilogy begins with The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, continues in The Broken Kingdoms and concludes in The Kingdom of Gods.

Prefer reading this one to listening

Yeine is named one of the potential heirs to the king. But the throne of the Hundred Thousand Kingdoms is not easily won, and Yeine is thrust into a vicious power struggle with a pair of cousins she never knew she had. As she fights for her life, she draws ever closer to the secrets of her mother's death and her family's bloody history. This is the book and trilogy that introduced me to Jemisin and her superb worldbuilding, characters, and exceptional writing. It can get confusing between the mortals and the Gods but stick with it. It will amaze you. I probably enjoyed it more the first time reading - listened to the audiobook 2nd reading and it was good not great. Narrator could be better. Still worthwhile.

A story of power and how it's wielded

A woman finds herself stuck in the midst of devotees of Machiavelli and tries to make the best of it. I really enjoyed it.

Useless girl does nothing

Main character is a weak girl who has all her decisions made for her. Spends most of the book waiting for the dark god to make love with her. Boring boring boring.

can't believe she won the hugo award

sloppy story telling with going from speaking in past and present tense in the same sentence really made getting into it hard on audiobook. her giving synopsis constantly of important info and even events she leads up to tell you what happened in oast tense instead of talking you through the event.. the only real time she looked like she put any effort into the storytelling was when the main character was either fantasizing or actually screwing the only other main character which spoiler is a a God.. Absolutely terrible book,if I didnt pay my credit for it and had nothing to listen to at work I wouldnt have finished it. her characters are lifeless and just honestly cant give it a worse review. This is coming from some one who has never put down a fantasy book. DONT WASTE YOUR TIME listen to Robin Hobb or Brandon Sanderson or someone half decent.

Hard to get into

Very hard to get into. Writing style is not what I’m into for starters so bear in mind when choosing as you may not get through it. Story is a bit hard to follow.
