Story
I never expected to have to uproot my family to go live in my parents’ isolated cottage on Lost Lake. It’s twenty miles to the nearest town, an insignificant speck in endless pine forests. Nobody’s lived here for a decade. Now, I pick up a rusty pail from its nest of autumn leaves and turn to my daughter. Suddenly, I recall how I used to help my own mother pick wild strawberries up here as a little girl. Maybe, this isn’t a punishment. Maybe this place will be the making of our family.

Story
The friendship starts with a letter...from aspiring writer Sarah to blunt but witty journalist Helen, complaining about Helen's most recent book review. And there begins a correspondence that blossoms into a friendship which spans over two decades. As the years pass, the women exchange details of loves lost and found, of family joys and upheavals. Sarah's letters filled with thoughts on her outwardly perfect marriage and her aching desire for children, and Helen's on the struggle of raising her young daughter alone.

Story
It's Una Darling's 17th birthday, but nobody feels much like celebrating. It's been exactly a year since the tragic death of her father, Finn, and the people he left behind have been doing their best to get on with things. But it hasn't been easy. Daphne is tired of sadness, of mourning the long life she and her husband were meant to share, but doesn't quite know how to get past it. And she can't seem to get through to her stepdaughter - they barely speak anymore, so Daphne knows nothing of the unexpected solace Una has found, or of the risk she's about to take.

Missing end of book
So disappointing, one of my favourite books, to listen to over 20 hours and then it is missing all the fabulous bits that tie this book all together. Such a shame as the narrator is fabulous. Needs to be revisited and the ending added in correctly

A complex story of human nature.
Despite the tragedy of the plot, the characters were beautifully drawn and the time period accurate. Engaging and hard to set aside. The ending a message of hope.

Issues with the audio
There were problems with the audio. It seemed like parts had been cut out, and the narrator changed at one point. There was also times when there was distinct background noise, and the audio was muffled.
