Story
A Great Winged One will soon arise and cast his fearsome shadow upon the land. And just as Night slays Day, and Day slays Night, so also shall another Black Witch rise to meet him, her powers vast beyond imagining. So foretells the greatest prophecy of the Gardnerian mages. Carnissa Gardner, the last prophesied Black Witch, drove back the enemy forces and saved her people during the Realm War. Now a new evil is on the horizon, and her granddaughter, Elloren, is believed to be Carnissa's heir—but utterly devoid of power in a society that prizes magical ability above nearly all else.

Publisher's Summary
Welcome to the dark decadence of Dhonielle Clayton's sharp tale of beauty, obsession and magic....
I am a Belle. I control beauty.
In the opulent world of Orléans, the people are born grey and damned, and only a Belle's powers can make them beautiful.
Camellia Beauregard wants to be the favourite Belle - the one chosen by the queen to tend to the royal family.
But once Camellia and her Belle sisters arrive at court, it becomes clear that being the favourite is not everything she always dreamed it would be. Behind the gilded palace walls live dark secrets, and Camellia soon learns that her powers may be far greater - and far darker - than she ever imagined.
When the queen asks Camellia to break the rules she lives by to save the ailing princess, she faces an impossible decision: protect herself and the way of the Belles, or risk her own life and change the world forever.

Absolutely stunning!
I loved every second of this audiobook - it was so much more than I anticipated! I loved the mystery, the magic and the dystopian setting. Can’t wait to read more books by Clayton!

Fantastic.
This book had me gripped from the start. The creepy, uncomfortable opulence and lavish descriptions were very well written. It comes across as subtly and deliberately sickening.
The intense betrayals and mystery surrounding the Belles and what they really are and what they might be capable of hangs in the air and keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout the entire story.
This book was outstanding and wonderfully written.

One of the best narrations I have experienced
This book was refreshingly different in the overall tone and plot but what really made it stand out was the Narrator! Rosie Jones has such a wonderful way of making each different character stand out with a diverse voice and the implementation of different quirks in how they speak. It was an absolute pleasure to listen to this book, I have thoroughly enjoyed it.

Interesting new world
i really enjoyed the world of The Belles. The intrigue and plotting was very cool. The different take on magic was well done. I look forward to the next book.
