Story
Somewhere on the frontier between thought and reality exists the Discworld, a parallel time and place that might sound and smell very much like our own, but which looks completely different. Particularly as it’s carried though space on the back of a giant turtle (sex unknown). It plays by different rules. But then, some things are the same everywhere. The Disc’s very existence is about to be threatened by a strange new blight: the world’s first tourist, upon whose survival rests the peace and prosperity of the land.

Publisher's Summary
In Tempests and Slaughter, fans of Tamora Pierce will be rewarded with the never-before-told story of how Numair Salmalín came to Tortall. Newcomers will discover an unforgettable fantasy adventure where a kingdom's future rests on the shoulders of a young man with unimaginable gifts and a talent for making vicious enemies.
The legend begins.
In the ancient halls of the Imperial University of Carthak, a young man has begun his journey to becoming one of most powerful mages the realm has ever known. Arram Draper is the youngest student in his class and has the Gift of unlimited potential for greatness . . . and of attracting danger.
At his side are his two best friends: clever Varice, a girl too often-overlooked, and Ozorne, the ‘leftover prince’ with secret ambitions. Together, these three forge a bond that will one day shape kingdoms.
But as Ozorne inches closer to the throne and Varice grows closer to Arram's heart, Arram realizes that one day – soon – he will have to decide where his loyalties truly lie.

Loved it!
Another fabulous book based in the Tortall universe. Great writing, an intriguing plot, and a main character you can't help but love from the first. I can't wait for the next instalment.

Fantastic. Wish it was longer.
A great prequel to Numair's tales. Just wish it was longer and we found out more about all the characters we have met before. Hope there is a sequel in the works.

Still great
I have always loved Tamora and this is still the same great standard. I did find it odd that they chose a female narrator for a male protagonist.

Amazing
Absolutely love this book and the choice of narrator was absolutely excellent. Made the story come alive quite nicely.
Tamora has done an excellent job fleshing out Numair's childhood and has some absolutely amazing characters. I love Sebo and Enzi. Faziy had my heart as much as she had Numair's.
Also fascinating to see this side of Ozorne! I hope we find out what those behavioural fits are and why they affect his family.
Can't wait for the next one. Thank you Tamora for your amazing stories

A must read for fans of Numair.
A beautiful exploration of the origins of Numair. This audiobook reminded me of why I fell in love with Tamora Pierce's work. The performance was spectacular, particularly the different voices.

Disappointing
The pace of the book was slow and lacked a central plot. I hoped it would get better but it just abruptly ended.
