Story
Orphaned at sixteen, James Wakefield was determined to be a gun shearer like his father. Now he's killed twice, changed his name, and is on the run from the law. He had his reasons for both murders, and he felt no joy in taking life. Or did he? Ben McKinnon, meanwhile, is heir to the vast Glenfinnan sheep property near Goulburn, New South Wales. He too has a secret that, if ever revealed, would shatter the privileged lives of his father, Alastair, and his sisters, Jenna and Adele. When fate brings James and Ben together, a powerful friendship is forged.

Story
In a time when desperate people were seizing with both hands the chance for freedom, refugees from more than 70 nations gathered beneath the Southern Cross to forge a new national identity. They came from all over war-torn Europe to the mountains of Australia to help realise one man's dream: the mighty Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme, one of the greatest engineering feats of the 20th century. People of all races and creeds tunnelled through a mountain range to turn the course of a majestic river, trying to put to rest ghosts from the inferno of history: buried memories, unimaginable pain and deadly secrets.

Story
In 1788, Thomas Kendall, a naïve 19-year-old sentenced to transportation for burglary, finds himself bound for Sydney Town and a new life in the wild and lawless land beneath the Southern Cross. Thomas fathers a dynasty that will last more than 200 years. His descendants play their part in the forging of a nation, but greed and prejudice see an irreparable rift in the family which will echo through the generations. It is only at the dawn of the new millennium - as an old journal lays bare a terrible secret - that the family can finally reclaim its honour....

Story
Van Diemen's Land was an island of stark contrasts; a harsh penal colony, an English idyll for its landed gentry, and an island so rich in natural resources it was a profiteer's paradise. Its capital Hobart Town had its contrasts too; the wealthy elite in their sandstone mansions, the exploited poor in the notorious slum known as Wapping, and the criminals and villains who haunted the dockside taverns and brothels of Sullivan's Cove.

Story
A stunning portrait of love, hope and survival on an isolated island off Western Australia. In Judy Nunn's latest compelling novel, compassion meets bigotry, hatred meets love, and ultimately despair meets hope on the windswept shores of Australia. On a barren island off the coast of Western Australia, a rickety wooden dinghy runs aground. Aboard are nine people who have no idea where they are. Strangers before the violent storm that tore their vessel apart, the instinct to survive has seen them bond.

Publisher's Summary
Master storyteller Judy Nunn has now sold over one million books worldwide. In her spellbinding new best seller, she takes us on a breathtaking journey deep into the red heart of Australia.
It is 2001, and as the world charges into the new millennium, a century-old dream is about to be realised in the Red Centre of Australia: the completion of the mighty Ghan railway, a long-lived vision to create the 'backbone of the continent', a line that will finally link Adelaide with the Top End.
But construction of the final leg between Alice Springs and Darwin will not be without its complications, for much of the desert it will cross is Aboriginal land.
Hired as a negotiator, Jessica Manning must walk a delicate line to reassure the elders their sacred sites will be protected. Will her innate understanding of the spiritual landscape, rooted in her own Arunta heritage, win their trust? It's not easy to keep the peace when Matthew Witherton and his survey team are quite literally blasting a rail corridor through the timeless land of the Never-Never.
When the paths of Jessica and Matthew finally cross, their respective cultures collide to reveal a mystery that demands attention. As they struggle against time to solve the puzzle, an ancient wrong is awakened and calls hauntingly across the vastness of the outback....

Great history in a novel
I loved the way book provided historical perspective of both aboriginal and early settlers. The story provided some great characters that enabled reader to immerse themselves in the challenging conditions and ideas of the past.

The research that has gone into this story isn’t lost on me. Superbly written. The reader, however, seemed to struggle with pronouncing some words and this made it difficult to listen to at times.

spit it out
wonderful story superbly written sadly mutilated by the reader. several
times I almost gave up listening. it was so frustrating and having to go back and translate what was read into the word or phrase that I am sure wad written for example 'personal read but I am sure the author wrore personable. .this is the second time I have struggled with an actor reading. bi guess reading is a different skill and requires a wider vocabulsry to allow real expresion.

Great story BUT
Great story of australian history, including the indigenous of our land.
As I do rather like to listen to a story, instead of reading it myself. As I’m time poor and listening I can do at any time.
I have listened to many books over the years, in many formats including tapes and CDs. But the convenience of audible far out weighs.
The narrator of this book The Ghan, is boring to say the least, she almost puts you to sleep and reads the book without feeling. She Reads in monotone, there’s no excitement, or travel in her voice during the story. It was hard remain in the story.
Judy Nunn has written well, it’s a shame the narrator doesn’t give it credit!
