Publisher's Summary

The instant Sunday Times bestseller, Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel investigates the idea of parallel worlds and possibilities, and plays with the very line along which time should run.

Lives separated by time and space have collided, and an exiled Englishman, a writer trapped far from home, and a girl destined to die too young, have each glimpsed a world that is not their own. Travelling through the centuries, between colonies on the moon and an ever-changing Earth, together their lives will solve a mystery that will make you question everything you thought you knew to be true.

From the award-winning author of Station Eleven.

Critic Reviews

It is heaven to be immersed in the waters of Mandel's imagination, she is always able to see past the present moment to the futures it contains and the past that informed it. Her perspective is so wise, so graceful, so rich and - despite everything - comforting. I loved Sea of Tranquility (Naomi Alderman, Women's Prize-winning author of The Power)
A spiralling, transportive triumph of storytelling - sci-fi with soul (Kiran Millwood Hargrave, author of The Mercies)

Intriguing

One of the best SF I have read in a while, with a moral dimension and a sense of mystery that finally intriguingly resolves leaving a question that for me is also at the heart of the current pandemic. Love the way the various time threads gradually reveal their connection, and the worlds and lives conjured. Voice performances are excellent.

not my thing

it's clever but drags on, wasn't to my liking but has good reviews so give it a go. I found some of the narrators annoying which didn't help.

Timely, thought provoking, well written and well read. Easily the best book I’ve listened to in some time…

Life is perception.

"Sea of Tranquility" by Emily St John Mandel (@emilystjohnmandel) is a book about Time Travel, and Simulation Hypothesis made famous by Nick Bostrom. This is my first novel by the modern author, and toward the end, I felt like it was worthwhile. In my reading experience, she reminds me of a more sane version of Philip K Dick without the pulp feel, more level-headed and calm in its sprinkling of items throughout the novel for it to all come together.

It's hard to review the book without revealing the author's bag of tricks. If you like a short sci-fi (I hate the term "speculative fiction"), that covers modes of time across centuries, this is a fun read.

When humanity meets the cold heartedness of a potential false reality, you are left with a novel that leaves you questioning your habits, and whether a slight bump into a new frequency, would find you somewhere else, entirely.

Enjoyable listen

A good companion for a long drive, after a slowish start. Great narration and easy to follow at 1.15 x speed. It wasn't quite as compelling as I'd expected..... some books are just better read than listened to and this may be one of them. Imaginative and entertaining nevertheless.

unique and captivating

Slow to grasp the beginning and had to use the book version to supplement my understanding. And went back to the Audible version and thoroughly enjoyed the immense complexities of time travel and multiple ones of the same person. Would make a great movie.

One of the best this year.

I loved the creativity, the anomaly, the curiosity, the honesty. Beautiful Olive and Roberts's ending - slow down! Absolutely brilliant. 💯
