Publisher's Summary

My name is Elizabeth Anne Hawksmith, and my age is 384 years. Each new settlement asks for a new journal, and so this Book of Shadows begins…

In the spring of 1628, the Witchfinder of Wessex finds himself a true Witch. As Bess Hawksmith watches her mother swing from the Hanging Tree she knows that only one man can save her from the same fate at the hands of the panicked mob: the Warlock Gideon Masters, and his Book of Shadows.

Secluded at his cottage in the woods, Gideon instructs Bess in the Craft, awakening formidable powers she didn't know she had and making her immortal. She couldn't have foreseen that even now, centuries later, he would be hunting her across time, determined to claim payment for saving her life.

In present-day England, Elizabeth has built a quiet life for herself, tending her garden and selling herbs and oils at the local farmers' market. But her solitude abruptly ends when a teenage girl called Tegan starts hanging around. Against her better judgment, Elizabeth begins teaching Tegan the ways of the Hedge Witch, in the process awakening memories - and demons - long thought forgotten.

Part historical romance, part modern fantasy, The Witch's Daughter is a fresh, compelling take on the magical, yet dangerous world of Witches. Listeners will long remember the fiercely independent heroine who survives plagues, wars, and the heartbreak that comes with immortality to remain true to herself, and protect the protégé she comes to love.

"maybe meant for a late teen market."

I know it's in fantasy sci-fi but I had trouble suspending disbelief. it had something to do with the constant poor choice character make to perpetuate the story line.

    "Good story - poor narrator"
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I am still in the middle of listening to this - and enjoying it, so yes would recommend the story but would say that I find the narrator very irritating.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Witch's Daughter?

When I get to the end of the story - I will let you know. But interested in how the Gideon Masters character comes into play.

Was The Witch's Daughter worth the listening time?

As in my comment above, I find the narrator very irritating. Not a strong reader, and her voices didn't change much when doing other characters - thought she was going to burst into tears! I have been spoilt by the wonderful narrator Davina Porter who I think is brilliant.

I will be checking further audibles with this narrator and make a point of not downloading them, although I have downloaded the second book in this series - so I will have to suffer the narration.

    Story
"Slow to get into the rhythm of the story but...."

It all becomes clearer, once you get further into it! :-)

It IS worth the time and effort, but it is a book you're better of not getting distracted by other 'stuff', while you listen, There are so many aspects that could appear benign but really are not :-)

It left me feeling sad that Bess's final story, she told, didn't go the way I had hoped....... :-(

I hope this has been helpful, without spoiling your listen! X

    "5 Star read"
Would you listen to The Witch's Daughter again? Why?

I would happily listen to this book another 10 times over! I can't remember the last time I was so engrossed in a fictional novel and captured by the storyline. Cleverly written with an unputdownable edge form the very start.

Who was your favorite character and why?

    Liza/Bess/Nurse

Which character – as performed by Marisa Calin – was your favourite?

    Hawksmith or Teagan

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I did not listen in one sitting but provided I had the time to do so I would gladly have done so.

    Any additional comments?

Read this book. Very rarely do I have so many great things to say about a single read. Historical, captivating, Brackstone places you where she wants you, enthralling and spell bindingly fun to read.

What made the experience of listening to The Witch's Daughter the most enjoyable?

I love the narrator, i found her voice interesting and easy to listen too. The story flipped back and forth which made it interesting.

What other book might you compare The Witch's Daughter to, and why?

I listened to the Silver Witch first which is book 2, They some how seemed linked but weren't, similar, but so different, odd to explain.

What about Marisa Calin’s performance did you like?

I like how you could easily differentiate between characters, her voice was interesting and easy to listen too

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I felt protective towards Bess and her characters throughout the book she seemed quite vulnerable.

    Story
"Poor narration spoiled a good story"

what a shame -a promising story let down by the poor narration I almost gave up but the story was worth hearing even if rather predictable. The narrator's strange accents for the various characters and a very flat tone really got in the way of a good tale of a witch's past life over several centuries trying to escape her previous persecution and live a "normal" useful life without using magic to attract past enemies
