When fifteen-year-old Jacob Lau is pulled from the crumpled remains of his mother's car, no one can explain why he was driving or why the police can't find his mother's body. Made a ward of his uncle and thousands of miles from home, a beautiful and mysterious neighbor, Dr. Abigail Silva, offers to use her unique abilities to help him find his mom. In exchange, she requires Jacob to train as a Soulkeeper, a gifted warrior charged with protecting human souls. He agrees to her demands, desperate for any clue to the mystery of his mother's disappearance. But soon Jacob finds himself trapped in a web of half-truths, and questions Dr. Silva's motives for helping him.

"It's Incredible !!!"
It is incredibly easy to get swept up into it. I found myself desperately want to know more about this new, exciting and terrifying world that Jacob is thrust into. It is one of the most well-developed plots I've seen in a long tim Ching does an incredible job crafting the different story elements so that they fit . Often times with series, the first book is basically just glorified world-building. While the author does put a great deal of time and effort into this, the story does actually move along at a decent pace. I really enjoyed listening to this audiobook.
I found myself very drawn into this book, much more than expected. The audiobook reader Jeffrey Kaffer is excellent and does not distract from the reading. I found myself engaged and I feel that the narrator was much responsible for this, he has a great voice that draws you into the book, reading with a flat voice that allows for the book to lead the way. I will look for other books by him in the future.
For the book The Soulkeepers, I really enjoyed this listen, I was charmed by the characters and find myself looking forward to the next book. The subject of magic can often be repetitive but I find that the author GP Ching has found a fresh viewpoint and topic for this that I really enjoyed.
"So you liked Harry Potter? Give this a shot."
I would burn one of my words on signifying the age level for this book. My next would be used to classify it and my last word would explain my enjoyment. Teenager, supernatural, captivating.
Besides the obvious main character I really liked Abigail. Her beauty, wisdom, and mystery was very intriguing.
Kafer was able to make his voice sound like and match what I thought each character should feel like. He really hit the mark in my opinion.
There are several scenes throughout the book that made me empathize with Mr. Lau and invoked such emotion as anger, vindication, or relief. I never shed a tear nor did I laugh out loud.
All in all I enjoyed this book and may even check out the next one.
"I do not care for tha paranormal but..."
...I purchased this book to listen and judge whether I believed my teen grandchildren might enjoy it. The narration is excellent, but this is just not the type of book that appeals to me. I could not finish it.
"Fun young adult series"
Well written with interesting characters. This is a good first book in the series. The book is complete in its storyline, but there is still enough unanswered questions to interest the readers in subsequent books.
I would recommend this book to a friend who is looking for a YA/New Adult book with a paranormal feel. This book also has some religious overtones to it that were just the right touch. I didn't feel as though I would being 'hit over the head' with them.
My favorite character in the book is Malini. She is the first person who talks to Jacob when he arrives at this new school. Malini, not being from the area, understands the town 'politics' and how being an outsider can make it rough on a teenager.
I've listened to one other book performed by Mr. Kafer. It was a non fiction book so I was happy to hear him perform a fiction book. Mr. Kafer did a wonderful job. By giving each character their own voice and tone, he draws you into the story.
Jacob is a 15 year old boy, who after an accident that results in the disappearance of his mother, moves from Hawaii to Paris, Illinois to live with an Uncle, Aunt and cousin that he didn't even know existed. It is here in Paris, IL that Jacob finds out that is not like other teenagers. With the help of his neighbor, Dr. Silva and Malini, a friend from school, Jacob is able to begin to understand the special gifts he has and learns some things about himself and his family.
I really enjoyed this book and look forward to the next book in the series.
"Great narration, not really my type of story"
Such an interesting read. Not your typical YA, this has many religious elements to the story. It does have the Urban Fantasy feel with Christian undertones.
The story moves rather slowly at times. It is almost all from Jacob's POV, with a couple snippets of others. It keeps the reader in the dark about what others are thinking or their motivations. Many times the supporting characters do not give enough hints into what they think and feel.
The romance is light, this is definitely a more male oriented YA read. Not really flowery or girly. There are also plenty of battle type scenes. It is definitely about the battle between good and evil.
I listened to the audiobook narrated by Jeffrey Kafer, is wonderful! He has a great deep voice that carries you through the story. He is one of the reasons I stuck with the story, even after it was clear it wasn't exactly to my taste. I loved his read and would really like to try something that is in my wheel house. His pace was terrific and he had an engaging energy in the read.
Overall, this wasn't a read for me, but I can see many audiences it would appeal to, very much. It is more of a Christian YA theme more geared to male readers.

Exciting Paranormal Adventure
I loved the angels/ fallen angels & the lessens of angels & demons & god.
Jacob Lau is my favorite character. Maulani is a good 2nd fav. Gideon & Dr Silva were pretty awesome too!
A paranormal sci fi world filled with angels vs fallen angels.
I enjoyed listening to this book! It was quite an education as far as angels both good & bad. I loved all the voices the narrator did. Jeffrey Kafer made the story much more enjoyable with the added voices & emotions and excitement! I was really glad to see Mom found too! I found the story Katrina said as to why the family name changed from Laudner to Lau was pretty sad. Kuddos to both the author & the narrator for making this story so enjoyable! I read this in 1 sitting straight thru! It was that good!
this was a great book I hope the rest of this series is just as good
"Strange to me."
It took a bit for me to get into this book. I am not sure why though. I love the story line and the characters and such. After a while, I got into it and couldn't put it down. I wonder if maybe it was due to the narrator being a male. I had never listened to a male narrator before now and it was odd. It certainly changes the way you here things. Strange... He did a great job though! Loved it!!
Enjoyed the story. Good ending. Overall a very good book.will be looking at the rest of the series. Very soon.
"Stick with it!"
I was not sure at the beginning, but I am extremely pleased I stuck with it. Thoroughly enjoyable.
