The story of the first Illeniel wizard continues.
Tyrion's life among the She'Har had become quiet, but the sins of his youth have returned to haunt him. The Mordan wardens have discovered one of his children, and the other groves are racing to find and claim the rest of his illegitimate offspring. Unable to stand by and watch as his children are used as pawns against one another, Tyrion makes a hard choice, one that will set him against everyone and everything he cares for. Others' love made his children strong, but his hate will make them powerful.

"dark, tragic, but very good."
the story is full of conflict start to finish and can be a serious jumble of feelings. one criticism would be that the dialog is rather abrupt leaving out much of the natural flow you see in thought and speech as though facts are being presented without the experience. good action with detailed imagery in a good way.
"excellent second book"
loved the whole story. Great characters i can only hope that there is more to come.
"It's okay 😉"
I like Manning's books. It never fails I always loose track of the time when I'm reading his books. 😀 This book was just a bit slow for my taste. Hopefully his next one speed up....lol Keep up the good work Michael....you print it and I'll roll it up and smoke it. 😈 hehe jk
I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next, as the children are.
"Great listen. Can't wait for the others to follow"
Really good plot continues to provide action with great diolog
No spoilers get it worth the listen I promise
Great job for all. Rememberof the narrator makes at least 75% of any book you listen to. Take the time to listen to the narrator always. Alex is perfect for this series. I never get tired of listening to him.
Stayed up all night listening to both books
Can't wait to see what come next in the series. Enjoy...
"I almost didn't listen to this one."
The first book in this prequel was as disturbing as the author's preface had warned, and although I was unable to put it down, I wasn't certain that I wanted to continue down that road.
Manning's characters are so vivid, and Alex Wyndham's narration is so rich that I decided that I had to risk it; I didn't want to miss anything that would help enrich the Mageborn series when I move on to it. (Which I will!!)
So no spoilers here... I will only say that I am very glad that I took the risk. The book is excellent, and aside from just a little sleep I listened straight through!
This book went by far too quickly. That would be my only complaint. The narrator did an amazing job bringing the book to life. The book remains fairly unpredictable and exciting. I highly recommend this series to anyone interested in high fantasy. It should be noted that this series has material that leans towards a more mature audience. However it is very subtle in its application and can be palatable for a younger audience as well. I eagerly await book 3.
This is an awesome series to get into. The darkness the main character must go through is wonderfully different than any other book I have read. I highly recommend this book and can't wait for the next installment.
"it hurts my soul"
This book hurt my soul, but made my brain curious and kept me constantly digging for more.
Great, exiting, riveting.
It flows so beautifully, carrying on the story of the beginning of the universe of the Mageborn series. The author really captures the strains of emotion that flow through the story and brings it to life. One can really feel the love and hatred being churned about in the story. The arena fights are well crafted stories, no problem suspending belief and letting the 'new' reality wash over.
Alex voices the book such that it is simply a pleasure to audit the story.
Neither laughter nor crying, but a sense of involvement and deep emotional involvement.
This is a great read and I look forward to more of the same as the story progresses. Easily in the same league as David Gemmell and Joe Abercrombie!
"A disappointing sequel"
This book fell into the classic trap of sequel disease. It felt as if the author, having given so much to the first book, struggled to maintain the same (high) quality. There were too many contrived situations, too much gratuitous language and scenes which lent nothing really to the story, and too much wilful blindness from a lead character we had been led to believe was so talented, highly intelligent and had been through so much. The contradiction was stark.
Whilst I enjoyed much of what was on offer, I felt this effort lacked the strength, depth and "natural flow" of the first book in the series.
Loved it. A little boring the battles some time but otherwise really catchy. Strongly recommend it.
"Better than expected..."
Started slow. Became really good. Want more!
These additional words are a meaningless Audible requirement. Done.
"who does not love a bad guy"
i loved the idea that he falls into the anti hero charecter, you follow his path and think i could have done that, not thinking of the consequences
the matter of fact moment when the main character is called a rapist and he has to face up to what he has done, and that what he thought was harmless fun was much darker
i wish i could easily narrow it down to one
when he wants to help his daughter, but all he can do to help her is make her harder and more vicious
"Great sequel, picks up from previous book."
See it as 1 whole book from last book an this book. Style and story flow havent changed.
The darker side of fantasy written and performed masterfully. A true 'must read' for lovers of the genre.
"Becoming one of my favourite authors"
I love this series of books, and the narrator does a fantastic job. My own complaint is that these books just aren't long enough, I love them so much I just don't want them to end.
"this series is building"
after the building of the story and psychology in the first book I found this one to flow much better as a story. looking forward to book 3.
