The fourth book in the Evermen Saga.
The Lord of the Night is coming. The future of civilization is at stake.
Miro, high lord of Altura, is in the Imperial capital to prepare the Empire for the onslaught. He knows his homeland lies directly in the enemy's path but struggles to form the alliances he needs.
As the high lords bicker, Ella seeks the help of the newly crowned emperor, Killian. But, amid the growing tensions, their responsibilities drive them apart and, as emperor, Killian can't be seen to favor Ella's homeland.
Against a backdrop of old hurts, guilty secrets, and shaky new allegiances, people of all nations and abilities must learn to trust one another again, and form a united front against a powerful enemy intent on destroying them once and for all.

These last four book have been just a delight it has been very hard waiting on the next book. The Narrator had made each character come to life. I very much recommend everybody to read this great Triology .
A fantastic series of books, a truly epic fantasy and love story. Beautifully told and very good narration. The narration gave an excellent interpretation of the characters and kept me listening.
"Thoroughly enjoyable but a little too convenient"
I've now finished listening to this series and I enjoyed the entire thing. Simon Vance, as always, makes this book come alive and choosing him as a reader saved it, because the story itself sort of falls together too easily -- too many last minute saves, narrow escapes, etc. etc. The term dues ex machina definitely comes to mind.
So, I would unhesitatingly suggest this as an enjoyable tale, but at same time, warn people that they shouldn't expect anything deep or terribly moving from the text itself. This is a real shame because some of the premises, like the nature of gods, are very interesting and could have been the subject of much deeper inquiry. As it is, it is a fun and enjoyable bit of fluff, great for whiling the miles away, and certainly not a source of frustration. But do realize, it is Simon Vance's skill as a reader, that saves this book from being entirely skippable.
"Everything I've come to expect from a fantasy saga"
... and that's saying something for a 4 book saga. Interesting characters, court intrigue, diabolical villains, apocalyptic battles, star-crossed lovers and superb narration.
Mot is a vivid imagination That produces a series such as this. I'm disappointed that I've finished this series.
"An OK story.."
I stayed with the series because I was curious enough that I wanted to know what happened with the characters, but this just never struck me as a brilliant story. Yes, there was plenty of action, but I guess that I'm just not that into reading about battle after battle. I prefer deeper connection with the characters, and IMHO, none of them really leapt off the pages.
The magic system also seemed all over the place, on the one hand Ella and others use"Essence" to make and power technologically advanced inventions; on the other hand the enchanters resort to wand magic (powered by essence - but it still felt like a forced connection between arcane magic and advanced technology). Between the contraptions, the undead, the necromancers, the wands, and the superhuman beings, it just seemed like this story has everything thrown in but the kitchen sink. The first books had promise, but I'm not a fan of how the story became cluttered with the above mentioned things by the end of the series.
Overall, somewhat entertaining, but not a story that will stick with me, nor one that I would want to read again - and to me, those things are essential to a great story.
"An excellent end to a wonderful series"
This has been one of my favorite series ever. This, the last in the saga, was filled with action and adventure. It also tied up all the loose ends from the other three books. I am happy to be completed with the series because I now have the whole story; but I'm sad that there isn't another one to roll into. James Maxwell is an amazing author and Simon Vance always brings the story to life. I have read all of James Maxwell's publications, I just hope the next installment of the Shifting Tides series comes out soon.
I really enjoyed this book. From book 1 to the final book it had me. I even went back because sometimes I didn't pay attention. I'm going on to the next book fireblood hoping it's as good as this series. it's by the same author so probably LOL
"Well written saga"
This was a wonderful series to follow. From book one through four I was hooked by the detailed and epic battles. The tales spanned the range from swashbuckling pirates to enchanted forests. If you enjoy fantasy this will be enjoyable for you to read. It wasn't the most amazing story and I was kind of tired of hearing about Amber being held prisoner (after her fifth or so capture I was REALLY over the whole annoying damsel in distress thing). And if you can overlook the heteronormative/religious undertones it's a good read for a fantasy story.
"All in till the end"
Great read for the series. Battle scenes you almost envision but the end.... just seemed so unfullfilling compared to the grandness of the story.
"I am so terribly..."
I am so terribly sad I have now come to the end of this series! It is absolutely captivating, surprising at every turn and before you know it, you are in love with every character. Thank you for magical read!!
"The Lore of the Evermen"
Enjoyed it but I prefer reading books instead of listening. The first 2 I read and my imagination for the voices were so different from the narrator. Plus I almost feel asleep a couple of times from listening. Very good series but I will be reading books from now on.
A grand tale of fantasy, combined with love, death and honour. A worthy read! Very good!
I have enjoyed listening to this series. So much so I have missed sleep just to catch that last exciting chapter!
I was hooked into the last 2 books as the story came to an end I was heart broken that there was no more as it seemed that the story had more to enfold for the empore and the entrantarance
I loved these books, the scope, the plots, the characters performed brilliantly by Simon Vance, loved them one and all.
fantastic story. lost myself in it everytime I listened. wonderfully descriptive and emotional. A good finale to an intreging series of books.
"Much too neat an ending"
Not bad, but battle scenes over long. The last book was disappointing with a rather predictable end.
