Publisher's Summary

The Western Front, 1916. Private Percy Blakeney wakes up. He is lying on fresh spring grass. He can hear birdsong, and the wind in the leaves in the trees. Where have the mud, blood, and blasted landscape of No Man's Land gone?

Madison, Wisconsin, 2015. Cop Monica Jansson is exploring the burned-out home of a reclusive - some said mad, others dangerous - scientist when she finds a curious gadget: a box containing some wiring, a three-way switch and a potato. It is the prototype of an invention that will change the way Mankind views his world forever. And that's an understatement if ever there was one....

The Long Earth is the first novel in an exciting new collaboration between the creator of Discworld, Terry Pratchett, and the acclaimed SF writer Stephen Baxter.

Reminds me what we are go to miss

Pratchett's familiar sense of humour with a little more science behind it. His books always comment on some part of society and this one is no different. One of the main characters is a reincarnated Tibetan motorcycle mechanic reborn into a soft drink vending machine. The story makes you laugh while it makes you think, I can't download the rest of the series quick enough.

Intriguing concept, but so slow

I really liked the premise of the story and how it panned out, but the concept of different evolutionary lines of development was over done. Descriptions of different combinations of animals and repeated worlds bored me almost to tears after the first half dozen - so much so that I almost gave up. However, I was interested to see how the story was completed, which was its saving grace.

The narration was good. His choice of 'voices', accents, timbre and annunciation fit the book very well.

Loved it

Great narrator, who fit the slightly whimsical yet serious tone that Terry Pratchet brings to the story. Wonderful all round.

Missed potential

Great concept, loads of promise and an entertaining narrator but it all falls unusually flat at the end for something associated with the mark of Pratchett. The end was abrupt and dissatisfying - hence my low rating. Its almost like I wouldn't be surprised to hear years from now that a couple of lost chapters for the book had been uncovered by someone during a garage sale ...

An interesting sci fi novel with the many sly references you'd expect from Pratchett

This is an imaginative journey that invites the reader to imagine what Earth could have been like. Some very apt commentary on our species and how we treat The Other. I really enjoyed the narration. Downloading the second volume straight away!

Where do I get the plans for a stepper?

For real. The long earth writes new stories in your own head. I wish was true - I’d be going west (or east) tomorrow.

Perfect escapism!

Officially a favourite! I’d read the 5 book series a few years ago as paperback- so nice to go back into the long earth in this really well done audio performance. Books are already such an escape, but the Long Earth is an escape with an escape. Can’t recommend highly enough!

Great premise, but missed on humour and science

A frustrating book, especially with Terry Pratchett contributing
The premise was awesome, but the characters were rather two dimensional and there were far too many elements of the story that either failed the basics of the science test or social dynamics.
And while it had the whackiness that Terry can bring, the humour to support it was sadly lacking.
Narration was ok, but the relatively shallow characters could possibly have been brought to life better
