Publisher's Summary

It's 2070-71. Nearly six decades after Step Day, and in the Long Earth the new Next posthuman society continues to evolve. For Joshua Valienté, now in his late 60s, it is time to take one last solo journey into the High Meggers: an adventure that turns into a disaster. Alone and facing death, his only hope of salvation lies with a group of trolls.

But as Joshua confronts his mortality, the Long Earth receives a signal from the stars. A signal that is picked up by radio astronomers but also in more abstract ways - by the trolls and by the Great Traversers. Its message is simple, but its implications are enormous: Join us. The supersmart Next realise that the Message contains instructions on how to develop an immense artificial intelligence, but to build it they have to seek help from throughout the industrious worlds of mankind. Bit by bit, byte by byte, they assemble a computer the size of a continent - a device that will alter the Long Earth's place within the cosmos and reveal the ultimate, life-affirming goal of those who sent the Message. Its impact will be felt by and resonate with all - mankind and other species, young and old, communities and individuals - who inhabit the Long Earth....

    "Fantastic story, couldn't stop listening."

Loved the premise that allowed for so much exploration and dreaming of possibilities. Brilliantly performed. A real treat. Thank you Stephen and Terry.

    "Weak, bland, no ummmf."

The long series was a bit of a let down. I actually listened to the whole series and it went from ok to worse. All the plots failed to grow any balls. Every story line was just too shallow. I think the subject was so diverse that it was hard to get really going. I actually love the idea. Just where was the meat. It all seemed very convenient.

    "Massively anticlimactic"

I've really enjoyed the rest of the Long Earth series. They've all left me wanting more and I was really looking forward to this final book wrapping up all the loose ends. Sadly, this book left me wanting more also and unfortunately it left more questions than it answered. So much so that having just finished it I'm a little bit angry!

It's only saving grace has been the consistent and fantastic narrations by Michael Fenton Stevens.

"A bit of a flop really."

This book was strange, it had a really good premise, with some wonderful ideas but then just seemed to stop before seriously exploring them.

I can't help but think that the Long Earth concept is a great seed idea that is going to be turned into much better books by a later writer some day.

"A fitting finale to a cosmic caper"

Ties up the loose ends nicely, while providing an interesting extension of the storyline. While it borrowed heavily from many sci-fi classics, it also pays homage to Discworld characters, albeit in a slightly tongue in cheek way.

    "A fitting end"

A lot of the time it feels like 2 books and the ultimate conclusion feels a little rushed and flat, almost as of Stephen Baxter just wanted to finish it and move on.

Still, a thoroughly enjoyable romp, full of the imagination and wit that has made this series such a wonderful and sadly unrepeatable collaboration.

In terms of performance, I would have preferred it without the accents.

Apologies for possible typos. Typing this without my glasses on and trusting the autocorrect.

"A fitting end to a legendary saga"

Excellent performance by Stevens. Though this book does certainly end the series with style, the storyline is left largely open-ended. I guess once you've created a long universe, it's difficult to just end it. Still, a very worthy read!
