What can I confess? I'm Ashlar. I'm a Taltos.
It's centuries since I've seen one single other member of my own species. Oh, there have been others. I've heard of them, chased after them, and in some instances almost found them. Mark, I say almost. But not in centuries have I touched my own flesh and blood, as humans are so fond of saying. Never in all this time....
When Ashlar learns that another Taltos has been seen, he is suddenly propelled into the haunting world of the Mayfair family, the New Orleans dynasty of witches forever besieged by ghosts, spirits, and their own dizzying powers. For Ashlar knows this powerful clan is intimately linked to the heritage of the Taltos.
In a swirling universe filled with death and life, corruption and innocence, this mesmerizing novel takes us on a wondrous journey back through the centuries to a civilization half human, of wholly mysterious origin, at odds with mortality and immortality, justice, and guilt. It is an enchanted, hypnotic world that could come only from the imagination of Anne Rice....

"Rice is a formidable talent.... [Taltos] is a curious amalgam of gothic, glamour fiction, alternate history and high soap opera." (The Washington Post Book World)
"Captivating.... Taltos is a wonderful offering...the best she's done.... There is a new member of Anne Rice's macabre family of monsters, and he's probably the loneliest, most melancholy creature on earth.... Rice keeps the mystic fires burning strong." (The Milwaukee Journal)
"Spellbinding.... Mythical.... Anne Rice is a pure storyteller." (Cosmopolitan)

"Another fantastic book"
It seems difficult to believe, but there is actually more to the story of the Mayfair witches to be told in this third and final book in the series. Anne Rice introduces new characters, new situations, new twists and turns to this magnificent story. I just wanted it to go on and on.
Anne Rice is a master story teller. Kate Reading is a master narrator with a voice like silk. Just sit back and listen!
"Loved it ready for next dose"
Loved it ready for next dose
Yes, i would recommend this all the others i have read so far.
Loved the voice of the narrative
"Not the best of Rice's work, but still quite good"
Another great continuation of the Mayfair Witches. I didn't like it as much as the 1st book. The 2nd book was a little disturbing, because of all of the incest and the concomitant violence that went along with it. This book focused on the murder of a Taltos member, revenge for their death, the cleansing of the darkness inside of the Talamasca, the history of the Taltos, and of more growth in the Mayfair family, now freed from Lasher's evil influence. Mona is my favorite character.
I've already listened to the next three books in the series, Merrick, Blackwood Farm, and Blood Canticle. I loved Merrick and Blackwood Farm, but did not really enjoy Blood Canticle. I don't think you have to listen to Rice's Witch books starting with The Witching hour and continuing through to Blood Canticle. Merrick and Blackwood Farm certainly can be read as stand alone novels. However, now that they are all unabridged it might be worth your time to read them in chronological order.
I'm not sure if I'll re-listen to any of Anne's books. She's probably in my top 30 to 50 favorite authors, but who knows, I won't rule out re-listening to a couple. I certainly do have favorites books among her work. I'm not interested in her Sleeping Beauty books, because I just don't think they'd hold my attention. However, I always look for new works from her. I enjoy her Werewolf books.
Any way, I'm getting off topic. Even though I only give the story 3 stars I still recommend listening to this if your a Rice fan and especially if you have started the Witching Hour, because it gives one closure to the series.
As always, Kate did another outstanding job narrating this book. She always does such a great job, and manages to maintain the same individual voices for each character across all of the novels, so there's never any confusion as to which character is speaking. Kudos to Kate!
"Intriguing Story, excellent narrator"
Must listen to the three books to get the full essence of the story. It is truly captivating.
"leaves you wanting more!"
loved the story! The performance enhanced the book for me. Wish there was more. But she leaves it to your imagination.
"the story feels unfinished."
the marginal ending to an otherwise great series that leaves the reader with a lot of unanswered questions. Anne Rice has abandon this series in a state that feels very much unfinished.
I have loved Anne Rice's writing from the time my best friend placed The Witching Hour in my hands 20 years ago. Taltos, the culmination of the Mayfair Witches saga is a fantastic, compelling, suspenseful tale. I don't know how many times I've read it since it came out in hardcover in 1994. This is the 1st of many listenings, I'm sure. I've heard the entire series as read by Kate Reading and I think she's the perfect person for the job! I'm thrilled to have her 'read me a story.'
exquisitely read, a culmination and romantic ending to a unique cuppling. a must read for all
"Anne Rice is a wonderful story teller!"
I loved it! This is my 3rd time re-reading her novels. Anne at her best!
"Not Her Best"
This isn't her best work but anything that accompanies the Witching Hour is going to have an interesting storyline. it doesn't mesh well with the original book's story line. The majority of the original characters are there so that helps redeem most everything.
Have just finished listening to Taltos and i completely adored this book. I know that this has wrapped up so much of the storyline but, aaahhhh i need to know so much! What happened to Mona when her daughter left her like this? What happens to Michael and Rowan? Who will be the 'Legacy' after Mona? What happens now to Ashlar and Morrigan??? So many questions!!!
Another fantastic book by Anne Rice. Almost sorry to get to the end...
Loved all 3 books in this series.
Rowan and Michael are coming to terms with the wreckage Lasher left behind; while Mona is starting to show. As long as there is no other demon baby everything should be OK, shouldn't it???
