It’s Christmas again at St Mary's and time for Max’s obligatory illegal jump. On this occasion, however, they’re right up against it.A loaded gun has been left behind in Ancient Egypt, and it’s up to them to retrieve it before anyone accidentally blows their own head off, thus affecting the timeline for centuries to come.
And as if that’s not enough, someone (Max) has inadvertently poisoned Mr Markham. It’s hot, they’re running out of supplies, they can’t find the gun and it’s all going horribly wrong. Again.

"Fantastic for fans of the series"
I very rarely give short stories 5 stars but this one was absolutely perfect for what it was-- a small snippet of life at St. Mary's. Hilarious as usual. A great way to get me even more excited for the release of the next book in a few days. And it was free which makes it even better! A wonderful way for fans of the series to spend 1+ hours. (This is not meant for people who have not read any of this series yet. Don't start with this short story. Start with book 1. You won't be sorry.)
I enjoyed this short and believe it is one of the best of the series.
"Very Enjoyable Short Story"
This was a very enjoyable short story featuring Max and the regular crew. I actually enjoy the author's short stories about St. Mary's as much or maybe more than the full novels. This one is worth the read for St. Mary's fans.
Yes. I enjoyed the often surprising and humorous language twists Jodi Taylor uses. Nice timing. I found myself laughing out loud frequently. The characters are believable in the fantastic situations they find themselves.
The reader was great. I liked her and her accent and the way she played the characters.
loved it. Narration Excellent loved the Accents .
story line Fun and Interesting, I will be looking/ Listening or More.
Along with the annual Doctor Who Xmas story, I now have another Xmas tradition to look forward to. Nothing like a little end of the world in our example form or another disaster romp.
"Jodi Taylor always delights"
The only complaint I have about this short story is the shortness. More is better.
if they have time machine, instead of going thousands years back, they could have gone to the day before she went to her assignment and tell her don't take the gun! that'd it!!!!!
"A trio of presents from St. Marys"
The Chronicles of St. Mary’s is Jodi Taylor’s madcap series about a set of time traveling British historians. A few months ago I read Just one damned thing after another which is the first in the series. Audible offered several short Christmas stories in the same series as freebies. So, I snatched them up and put them away as a present to myself for this holiday season. Here is one review of all three stories:
You should listen to Christmas Present first as it sets up the next story. Max, Peterson and Markham set out to rescue two historians on the 10th anniversary of their disappearance. In shades of It’s a Wonderful Life, Mrs Paterson (aka Clio, the Muse of History) presents Max with a vision that sets in motion this Christmas Eve adventure.
Ships & Stings & Wedding Rings is next up. It has been one year since Max and her team rescued Elspeth Gray. Both women are about to reminded that actions have consequences and you can’t always get want (but sometimes you get what you need). The sweet ending with Max and Leon reminded me of O. Henry’s The Gift of The Magi.
Finally we have When a Child Is Born. As Clio played a role in the earlier story, History itself does so here. For those unfamiliar with the St. Mary Chronicles, history is a sentient entity who can stop interference by the time traveling historians. In this case, however, History itself steers Max and her crew to ensure a particular outcome. Enlightening as well as entertaining.
These three are well worth acquiring and jump starting you into the season. Happy Holidays!
This is a cute short story narrated by Zara Ramm. She is a really wonderful narrator and could listen to her all day! The story is typical St. Mary's craziness. Glad the series isn't over yet!!
"Short and sweet"
One hour 25 minutes of light hearted entertainment - just enough time for one jump (or one commute, in my world).
Out of sync with the books I've listened to already, but it didn't detract. Set at Christmas time, and in the usual tradition of "St Mary's Christmas chaos"...........Characters consistent with previous books, and the same light tone.
If you're a fan of the series this is just more of the same, and as a give-away from audible, you may as well download and enjoy it.
"loved this book"
I have only just found this author and love her writing. I have become addicted to her books now and this is my favourite one so far.
Just love st Mary's, it never disappoints
Zara Ramm brings life and humour to the superb writing of Jodi Taylor. They should teach history at school like this!
"Always something to look forward too"
Love that Jodi gives us a festive treat 😀 may St Mary's continue for many years to come. ( whilst awaiting the next book I'm going back to the beginning).
Great books. Enjoy
"As always, thoroughly enjoyable"
I have loved every Jodi Taylor so far and this one was no exception. The reading was really good as well.
"I wanted it to carry on!!"
I love the series and the fact that Jodie gives her .5 books out for free is extremely generous.
I have read this book out of sequence so there were some major spoilers in it and to be honest I was a bit baffled by the time line but it wasn't a major issue. The story itself was full of the usual fun, frolics, angst and mayhem.
A thoroughly good listen and expertly read by Zara Ramm.
Have just discovered Jodi Taylor and her Chronicles of St Mary's - started off with the short stories and can't wait to read more of these. Not my usual choice of book but thoroughly enjoyable and I'm very glad I tried them. A fun fast paced story with good narration.
"Clever Marketing and a nice introduction"
A free book is always nice to have though it could be something the listener does not like. This was not the case as I thoroughly enjoyed the book and it will have the side effect that I shall be buying more of the same series
"Easy listening "
A gentle story that kept me listening, amusing in parts. The story moves along smoothly the characters are normal, it doesn't drag at any point and is suitable for young and old alike.
"great characters, brilliant narrator."
for me it it the narration that makes these stories for me. Max is Zara and Zara is Max. I like the humour.
