Publisher's Summary

The fabric of reality is bursting at the seams. The gnolls' negotiators are knocking at the gates of the Kremlin. Ancient half-forgotten gods take on a new lease on life as AlterWorld's avatars. A spark of the Creator's almighty will is still alive in the hearts of millions of players, obeying the impulses of their faith and knowledge while reshaping the Universe to suit their unspoken needs.

Initially AlterWorld came complete with infernal planes. So how about confronting a few demons? Not the cartoon characters dreamed up by some game designer: These are the true spawn of evil, archdemons and princes of hell, the vengeful retributors that our faith has delivered unto this newborn world.

Max has a lot on his plate. As a clan and alliance leader, he has to repay his debt to the gods and prepare for the upcoming battle for the First Temple. And still, how could he say no to a potential ally? Could he leave desperate fellow players without help? And how could he ignore the vast unclaimed territories just begging to be taken? Soon the volcanic wastelands of Inferno will shudder from the march of the steel legions. Its lands will awaken to the tramping of the countless mounts, players' pets, and familiars - and groan under the thunderous gait of the many assault golems.

    "Still good, but losing steam..."

The book definitely isn't bad by any means. It was engaging and entertaining, but it lacked a lot of spark that made books 1 and 2 so great. My concerns that I voiced in my review of book three are ampified to some extent in this installment. They were also softened by criticism of secret police, the Russian government, and generalized corruption. As long as it's not the protagonist being corrupt. Then it's absolutely justified.

The main problem with books like these, or really any progressive fantasy/sci-fi, is the danger of making the protagonists overpowered. Rus has turned Max to 11 in this installment. It lost a lot of the danger or dramatic quality, making him so extremely powerful. I will grant this- this may have been necessary for the coming books as there appears to be an extremely powerful enemy on its way.

There were also a number of plot gaps and/or bizarre reactions to major events. Perhaps this is more of the glorius Russian Spirit coming through, who am I to judge.

Again, I did enjoy this book and finished it in record time. It was entertaining and carried me along without much trouble. I just have to be honest about my perceptions of flaws or cracks in the foundation. If we only focused on 'atta boys' reviews would be meaningless. I said it in book III's review (I believe), but I'll say it again here: I fully accept that some of the issues I am having with the series are the result of translation error and/or cultural divide.

Still worth a credit, but I have grave concerns about the future books, if we ever get them on audible.

    "Very fun read!"

Loved this one! I struggled to find every moment I could to listen more! Really liked the way that there are multiple adventures Max (the main character) goes on almost one right after the other. There are still the IRL moments that are a nice break from the action.

Some reviews say that they do not like that Mac is not written the same as he was, but what these reviews are not taking into account is that Max is changing and growing to fit into the world. Max even mentions how he is not the same person anymore. If any human goes through what he has they would not be the same. In earlier books a character even mentioned that with Max's then novice mindset, he was not ready for the world he was walking into. Now Max is a combat general with many battles under his belt, and it was great to see him grow into the role.

Favorite moments: Most IRL parts, befriending a demon, coming to a friend's rescue and saving said friends zombie people, Max finally confronting his arch nemesis (how he handles him is brutal!), and makig good on his agreement to Loth.

Michael Goldstrom has easily become one of my top favorite narrators with these books. he has a way of really getting me into the story. Truth be told, I had a dream of me going perma like in the books and he was narrating the dream. Creepy but cool.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. He keeps a good balance between action, advancement of the story and fleshing out the world...world's. Keep 'em coming please.
