Publisher's Summary

The Scourwind family legacy brought the empire to the height of its power and prosperity and defended it against all enemies. Now one man's machinations aim to shift the balance of power - with violent and devastating consequences.

When the trusted General Corian launches a coup against Emperor Scourwind, he hurls the planetary kingdom into chaos. To secure his claim as ruler, Corian will need the strength of the Scourwind name behind him, and he will stop at nothing to bring under his grasp the young Scourwind heirs, twins Lydia and Brennan. Barely into adulthood, the two are thrust into the crossfire. Battling new obstacles at every turn, they eventually find refuge with Mira Delsol, pirate and former member of the elite empire forces.

As the stakes rise, loyalists, mercenaries, and political opportunists rally around the heirs in a desperate bid to unseat the usurper. But if their risky gambit fails, will the empire crumble into oblivion?

    "I loved the world building"

This is world building on Sanderson's level.
You connect to the main characters in the book and cheers them on. The title of the book is misguiding I think as the strong female main character only has a bi-role. There is things that is mysterious and ready for reviling in the sequels. I hope for that at least.

    "Spaceballs !!"

The villains remind me of characters from Spaceballs (Lord Helmet), and Austin Powers. I'd think a general as notorious as this bad guy shouldn't end the scene with a cliche villainous laugh. The Narrator makes the story more juvenile.

"Great story with really bad voice acting"
What did you love best about Heirs of Empire?

    The story was good.

Would you be willing to try another one of Deric McNish’s performances?

    No.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    No.

    Any additional comments?

The voice actor misrepresented characters at a high level and gave wholly inaccurate intonation on sentences throughout. For example, when someone was supposed to sound authoritative, they sounded whiny and obnoxious. The voice used for the young male character who was mid to late teens sounded like a whiny 8 year old. As one of the primary characters this left a decidedly inaccurate slant to the entire performance. There was a couple of good voices, in terms of giving the characters appropriate personality, particularly Del Sol and Corian. Everyone else was a train wreck. It felt like the voice actor didn't have the range to cover the number of characters and would have been better off doing voices more in his range even if they sounded somewhat similar.

"Good price for 10 hours of entertainment"

Was an entertaining book and audio book. Also a good deal for 99 cents. Probably a bit too similar to star wars. Cadre = Jedi. Male and female young twins as main characters. Rebels vs empire.

    "Some Good Writing here"
What made the experience of listening to Heirs of Empire the most enjoyable?

The narrator was reliable in tone and voice making the story feel real enough to enjoy. Good narration can help an average storey, but when =they have good writing to work with it all the more enjoyable

What other book might you compare Heirs of Empire to and why?

I don't compare book or authors, it cheapens the work of the author. Evan is Evan.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Not sure anything actually moved me, though there were some rather touching moments to add to the characters. I still think it could have been a tad more personable, but that is just me.

    Any additional comments?

In this field, there are hundreds of authors, and while I did enjoy this I saw nothing terribly different than many others in the field. It is better written than most, so I can recommend it on those grounds alone.

    Story
    "Uninspired story, lacklustre performance."

The story seemed flat, no real tension or drama, except a few small points. The world the book is set in, and it's technology, have some interesting facets, but the story rarely leveraged it. Most of the characters are shallow, two dimensional, and seemed quite generic. The narrator is a bit halting, and the conversation passages never felt natural. This story may work as a foundation for future books in a series, and with a better narrator, they may be better, as I believe this author has more to offer, based on other books he has written.

    Story
"God Hath No Fury Like Mira Delsol Scorned"

An absolutely enjoyable contemporary Sci-Fi novel. From Cadre, essentially Jedi Knights with awesome multi-tool staffs, to teenagers (two royals, two commoners) forced into war, to modern spacecraft that sail on wind streams.

There's a lot going on in the telling of this story, with Mira Delsol's single-purpose drive to avenge her friend's death at the hands of a diabolical former Cadre and his mutinous royal soldiers being most entertaining. Very well written (with the possible exception with the over-use of the "Skipper" honorific) and the narration kept pulling me back to listen further as I went about other real-world tasks.

Although it is not listed as a series, the ending is such that it could extend into another novel or two. There are several intentional conundrums brought out during the story that had never been explained. Currie should seriously consider doing that.

Arr, and yes, thar be pirates!

    Story
"Good plot - a little rough listen at times"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

The book itself is OK, but some of the character interactions and development left me disappointed. There are also some assumptions made that the reader simply knows the political landscape and the various characters back history without explanation.

Would you be willing to try another book from Evan Currie? Why or why not?

I've read of Currie's other books, so there is a possibility...

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

As previously mentioned - the character development was just not there. So I don't necessary blame the narrator.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

    Not unless something changed..

    Any additional comments?

This book had more potential - it seemed like it was rushed and therefore only gets a 3 out of 5.

    "Mixed feelings. "

I don't know what to write. Part of me want to give 2 stars and part 5. I've liked concept and didn't liked characters and the universe. I'll have to read book 2 in order to decide ;) This book is neither good nor bad. You'll have to decide for yourself:) sorry I won't be any helpful with that..
