For generations the solar system--Mars, the moon, the asteroid belt--was humanity's great frontier. Until now. The alien artefact working through its program under the clouds of Venus has emerged to build a massive structure outside the orbit of Uranus: a gate that leads into a starless dark.
Jim Holden and the crew of the Rocinante are part of a vast flotilla of scientific and military ships going out to examine the artefact. But behind the scenes, a complex plot is unfolding, with the destruction of Holden at its core. As the emissaries of the human race try to find whether the gate is an opportunity or a threat, the greatest danger is the one they brought with them.

"Great characters, excellent dialogue, memorable fights, freakish experiments and twisty-turny mysteries" (Wired.com)
Even better than the first book the series. Feels like he's hitting his stride. Love where the story is going. A brooding menace on the horizon, much like GoT's White Walkers.
Narrator, Jefferson, has been SLAYING it on these stories.
Have to say his delivery of the Indian UN official, 'Avasarala' has been outstanding.
Brilliant story enhanced by great voice performance.
The expanse series is a great example of science fiction making a contribution by being thoughtful and imaginative. The contribution cones from the plausibility of the social and technological possibilities that are fuel for serious thought about our world as it is now. And if that isn't enough there's plenty of action and humour to keep you reading. actually to be serious again even the action and humour make their contribution to the serious side.
A tale that continues the life and times of Captain Holden and his crew. The new characters that populate the story and the increasing familiarization with established player add new depth to the story. Each chapter leaves you wanting to know what happens next and the ever changing perspective keeps it fresh and engaging. It's classic space opera with genuine Herod and villains and mysterious aliens. Can't wait to start the next in the series.
Struggled to finish. Too much god talk. Not enough mystery, action etc. 1st and 2nd books 5/5. This book I wanted to stop half way through.
Audio Book addict and lover of sci-fi. I keep falling for series and and the excruciating wait for the next book. Beware.
Brilliant space opera that seamlessly connects onto the last book in the series. This one introduces further new characters and lets the listener know how Holden's adventures affected other people. The detective is still aboard, too, but not a feature character.
"Another enjoyable romp"
Another enjoyable romp from Corey’s “Expanse” series. Our heroes, Jim Holden and the crew of the Rocinante, have new problems – as if the proto-molecule and all it has been creating weren’t enough already! This 3rd novel of the series sometimes lacked the break-neck pace of the earlier books, but there are nice plot developments, new characters to introduce and of course lots of action sequences. Same narrator, Jefferson Mays, as 1st two books – he does a good job.
"The Expanse Series Continues to Impress."
Although, in my opinion, it is not as good as the first two books, Abaddon's Gate is great continuation of the series. The Authors continue to flesh out their universe and developed well thought out characters. I eagerly await the next installment.
I have enjoyed The Expanse series a great deal so far however Abaddon's Gate is defiantly the weakest of the three so far. Very long winded with the character racing about in circles a great deal of the time.
"Could not stop listening ."
Loved the story, some overtones of space odyssey with Miller character, but overall excellent and well narrated . I would recommend.
"Good story, but performance clean up needed"
The story is fantastic, like the other books great characters. certainly worth a listen or read.
Seems there are a few repeating sections - not sure if this is software related or the recording.
"Best book in the series so far"
I am a huge fan of the ship to ship combat in this series and this book has surprisingly little, yet still managed to entertain and capture me for the entire thing. Love the characters and will be seeing this series through to the end. Another great narration from Jefferson too... although I gather I will need to burn through the next one to get back to his tones for the 5th instalment....
"love the story"
it's not the best written book (he said, she asked) but I love the story all the other series have been humanity already has interstellar travel.
this one though is a nice build up from leaving earth with pre-ftl
"Best so far in series"
Really great book. Full of suspense as well as action. The only thing missing from this one is any view from the outside of the gate, more Avasarala would have been welcome to give the peroxide of the home worlds. The story telling and intertwining arcs reach a new high in this one, stepping up the action a notch and adding some extra welcome suspense to the mix. Great.
"can't wait for the next one"
well read, and well produced. very few, if any language artifacts I find annoying in other book series.
"Loved it. A new voice in Space Opera."
Great story, Strong characterisation and a performance to match. I only wish I'd known this was the third in the series. I really hope there will be more to come in the "Expanse" series.
