Stifter hatte ursprünglich offenbar einen ganzen Zyklus von Erzählungen geplant, der die Geschichte der gräflichen Familie Scharnast berichten sollte. Aus diesem Komplex sind drei Erzählungen erschienen: Die Mappe meines Urgroßvaters, Die Narrenburg und Prokopus. Genealogisch gesehen sind Prokopus und Gertraud das erste früheste jener Paare, deren Geschichte Stifter erzählt (und dabei jeweils mehrere Generationen überspringt). Wie in allen Ehegeschichten Stifters sind auch hier die autobiographischen Motive unübersehbar. Es ist [gleichwohl] kaum zulässig, in Gertraud, wie oft geschehen, lediglich ein Porträt von Amalia Stifter zu sehen, die der Dichtung ihres Mannes bekanntlich fremd gegenüberstand.
