Publisher's Summary

A man is dead.

The killer is a woman.

But what secrets lie beneath the surface - so dark that a man has to die?

Women are rarely cold-blooded killers. But when famous philanthropist Hugo Fletcher is found dead, there is no doubt in anybody's mind that the killer is a woman. And it is clear from the precision of the planning that this was no crime of passion. It was an execution.

The victim was revered the world over for his charitable work with trafficked Eastern European prostitutes, and as at least one of these girls is missing, Detective Chief Inspector Tom Douglas is certain that there has to be a connection.

But nothing is as it appears on the surface. A web of complex relationships is gradually revealed and it seems that everybody has something to hide. As each horrific secret is exposed, Tom Douglas begins to realise that this is much more than a simple murder case. And he has a terrible dilemma to face - whether to punish the guilty, or protect the innocent.

Intricate and chilling

How badly can a dream romance go wrong? This novel explores the depths of one man’s depravity and its effect on others. Lots of twists and very hard to stop listening to! The audio version of the thriller you can’t put down. Great characters and beautiful narration.

Not to my taste.

I like police procedural rather than mystery. Too Rebecca-esque for my taste. All could have been accomplished in a shorter novel.

So badly written I had to abandon it before half way

Although the principal police character seemed likeable and the murder investigation might have been of interest, both were swamped by the unfortunate plot device that required one character to read letter after nauseating letter that described the events of a decade earlier. The letters themselves made for irritating reading / listening. Their fictional author came across as both pathetic and stupid, and the letters and character were pretty hard to tolerate. As a plot device they simply interrupted the flow of what might have been a good police procedural; as literature they were a shabby failure. It was hard to believe in them or the fictional writer, and the content of them was so nauseating and pathetic that it was hard not to hit the off button immediately. In the end, after hearing less than half the book, I’ve been compelled to abandon the effort. Not worth the time or the irritation to continue. Turgid and unbelievable, there must be something better to read.
