Publisher's Summary

In the Alaska wilderness, four streetwise boys became men...and brothers. Now, the crazy ex-military survivalist who plucked Gabriel and three other boys from an abusive foster care home has died. But the sarge leaves them a final mission: to revive the dying town of Rescue.

Gabe is done with being a hero. Wounded in body and soul, the retired SEAL simply wants to remain holed up in his isolated cabin. He sure doesn’t want to be chief of police in some defunct town. But he has his orders.

Audrey needs a place to hide. After the Chicago librarian discovers a horrendous crime, she wakes to an assassin in her bedroom. Injured and terrified, she flees, covering her trail every inch of the way. New name, new ID, new home. As Audrey learns to survive in Rescue, she begins to fall for the town...and the intimidating chief of police who protects it.

Can the shy introvert and the deadly police chief find a life together?

Despite the discord in town, Gabe is finding his own peace with the quiet young woman who seems to have no past. She’s adorable, caring, and so very lost. But how can he trust someone who lies to him with every breath she takes?

"Cherise Sinclair is my go to author when I want a satisfying read. Heat, emotion, suspense. She’s got it all." (The NYT best-selling author Lexi Blake)

dust cover showed a great story

unfortunately, for me this didn't hit the mark. it had a great storyline and I was so eager to sink my teeth in. but all I got was nibbles after nibbles. the author set the hero and heroine beautifully but then led us to a garden party....
then the climax was almost flatline.
I've listened to Tor before and I liked him in that story but this one? oh boy, did not work as all.
as for charley a 1st time listen for me but not good at all. I think if there were better narrator's then this story may have floated. but for me..it sunk!!!!

no character devlopment and terrible male narrator

even though the premise of this story was interesting, I didn't even make it to the halfway mark. there was no proper character development. They just exist.
There was no reason outside of physical appearance for the two main characters to get together. no dialogue, nothing. Most women who want to stay inconspicuous don't throw themselves at the first police chief that they find. any decent guy would not seek heavy petting or intercourse with someone who had just been sexually assaulted and beaten up.
People with broken or bruised ribs generally don't want sex or for anyone to touch them.

narrators:
Tor Thom has a lovely voice, but he used the same monotonous tone whether he was narrating yelled insults or spoken conversation.

Charley Ongel did a great job with the material she had to work with.
