Publisher's Summary
What makes stepmothering so hard? And why are we, as people and a culture, so hard on stepmothers? How can we make it easier?
Stepmonster is a truly unique and groundbreaking book for women with stepchildren, men with kids who repartner, adult stepchildren, and anyone who cares about them. It is a comprehensive, cross-cultural, research-based reconsideration of stepfamily dynamics - from the perspective of the stepmother. How does she think, act, and feel, and why? Part no-holds-barred memoir of stepmothering in the trenches, part analysis of why stepmothering is tough and steps women with stepkids can take to thrive, Stepmonster has been hailed as "the thinking woman's guide to stepmothering" and "life altering", igniting conversations, controversy, and changes in how we perceive and experience stepmothering.

Honest and well researched
A great read for step parents and step children alike. An excellent representation of the truth, calling out the unreasonable expectations of society on women. Helped me to see clearly and be kinder to myself.

Raw honesty. Exploring a topic
Originally I got this for my partner, who struggles when she visits my six year old daughter and myself. Even though I consider my daughter well behaved (nothing like the stories in the book). After each trip their is a natural tension - from my partners draining experience which I never quite understand.
This book opened my eyes to some of the emotions she is feeling and why. More importantly highlighted the necessity of solid groundwork I am responsible for to help lay for a good relationship - not always or necessary a loving one between them.
Being aware of some of the common misconceptions and best practices will allow me as the father better adjust my own and my daughters behaviour around my partner.
