Alan Watts is wonderful to listen to and his style of presentation is just brilliant. He treats the subject matter with great humour and insight. Listening to him speak is also a joy and I have gained much from this particular work of his.
Even better than "You're It" with mostly new recordings that I have never heard before
"Brilliant. & Terrific to be able to listen rather than read!"
Wonderful to have the chance to not only receive the wisdom of this brilliant man, but to also actually hear the material as the original talk (& not read by a narrator). Thank you to everyone that made this possible. Fascinating material, perfect format.
"One of the Best"
This collection of original speeches by Alan Watts is amazing. It very detailed and very entertaining. Alan Watts has a way of taking serious ideas and explaining them in a humorous way. If you like philosophy, get this book.
I listen every time I forget I'm God. or just want to boing with Watts
"Lifts the veil of ignorance."
Alan Watt's brilliantly genius philosophies on the nature of reality and human consciousness explained in the most basic and simple use of language possible. An absolutely positive paradigm shift for all ages of curious minds who question what this life is all about. These narrations should be standard, core teachings for all human beings.... and to hear it told so simply (and humorously at times) from the source?!? Mind blowing. If you are looking for solid answers to life's persistent questions, look no further. The sublime is explained as well as it can be in words.
"Listen To This Meditative Experience"
Listen to this audio if you want to experience the meaning of life and death and what is and isn't. Alan Watts never tells you. In fact, he doesn't claim to know. But you do experience it. In between the silence of every word... you just experience it.
"Alan Watts at his best"
Easy listening. AW had a habit of deliberately repeating a few fundamental concepts over and over again but in many different ways so to approach those "truths" from different angles. My favourite spiritual teachers....an evergreen.
"Life changing contemplation!"
Alan Watts is a voice we should all hear in schools, in universities, and temples. A brilliant mind and an enlightened being.
"The intent is to drive you OUT OF YOUR MIND"
Alan is a great orator and I want to hear his words direct from the source. Unfortunately he does not have a significant number of recordings available here on Audible, at least not ones of any significant length. This particular one was very good, but it did require me to listen to short sections over an extended period, versus longer sessions of a few hours. I do plan to go back and listen again in between other books and lectures. There is a TON of good stuff here and each listen goes to another level.
NO ... that would have truly driven me out of my mind in a bad way. Alan is a master of Zen practice, particularly keen in his ability to ask open ended questions that really don't warrant an answer. That process is truly designed to bring you outside of the box, outside of your mind and INTO your heart, intuition, creative and authentic self. However, listening to 14+ hours of Alan Watts in one sitting would not be a healthy endeavor.
If you enjoy Mr. Watts, consider checking out Robert Bly, Joseph Campbell and Wayne Dyer. Watts was inspiring to all of them.
oh my god will listen to again and again. a playfully challenging peace-inducing entertaining delight throughout.
"Life saving, and yet ending my fear of death!"
As a great fan of Alan Watts, I'd heard many of his talks over and over, but when I landed this compilation in my mp3 player, I was given 14 hours of his finest speech. That was originally shortly before being admitted to hospital for a stem cell transplant, a risky procedure for rebooting my immune system with healthy young bone marrow cells, while the cancerous cells destroying my bones were killed off with a massive dose of chemo poison.
I mention this to illustrate the extraordinary experience I had in being kept safe, mentally, emotionally and spiritually by Alan Watts' unarguable description of reality from the inside-out. For two weeks, Alan kept me company as my ailing immune system was destroyed and then rebooted. His words eased my fears as they described my own being and relationship with the Universe in the most simple terms.
On my way to recovery, I eventually grasped that which most people couldn't conceive. Not because it requires any great intellectual feat, but because we are not conditioned to experience the world from the inside-out, a perspective from which death cannot exist as a direct experience, anymore than birth can.
This material is profoundly capable of shifting one's perspective with repetitive listening, and Alan Watts' beautiful voice makes it a pleasure to listen to again and again. as moments of epiphanic A-Ha come thick and fast.
This is the same set of lectures and anecdotes as You're It - almost identical. I sent it back.
Alan Watts had the most beautiful way of drifting us listeners to the serenity that is our pleasure of listening to his lectures. I would recommend this to anyone who takes a moment to glance at this review... You won't regret listening to this... :) The journey through this title is a funny one, much humour making the listening all that easier as well as taking in all the lessons :) - enjoy!
"genius real genius"
I listen to this as much as possible, Alan is so intelligent and explains in such a simple to understand way everything about life.
use this book as a bible for life and you'll achieve whatever you truly desire.
what an incredible man
"Excellent overall view of man and his mind"
I think many of us have come across snippets of Alan Watts lectures on YouTube. I got this on offer and finished it in a few days when doing some very manual labour. Having been interested in mental health though volunteer work and chats with various people I'm so glad I listened to this book.
His valuable insights into Hinduism, Buddhism, meditation and the various stages of mankind and how the mind works and in particular how simple life can be for all those people lost in mind confusion.
Invaluable asset which cuts through a lot of mind-twaddle that ony leads people into more confusion.
"A must must listen."
How can I even start to express by words how insightful and amazing is Alan Watts. You must get this, it will change the whole perception of life.
Absolutely enjoyed these talks by Alan Watts, what a joy to listen to him. Highly recommended!
As an introduction to Eastern philosophy for a Western mind this was incredibly eye opening. It has changed the way I think about many aspects of reality and helped to strengthen my spiritual understanding. I am excited to read more of Watts' material and to discover more Eastern spiritual thought.
The delivery was intelligent and witty although I felt that the structure was a little random and that many of the parts ended a bit abruptly. In his defence however, this was a lecture series and not a book.
Part of me felt a little robbed that I had to wait until my 37th year to discover such ideas. It's both interesting and rather frustrating that this way of thinking is almost entirely missing from our culture. A culture in which competition and hierarchy are such important aspects...
"Words of wisdom"
I love this audiobook. The subject matter Alan speaks of takes a while (for me) to grasp however his written down thoughts and audio media such as these talks are enabling me to make sense of what previously seemed nonsensical.
"A spiritual masterpiece"
I originally was a nihilist who believed in only my existence, I now know so much more on spirituality.
