Story
It's 1969, and a remote coastal town in Western Australia is poised to play a pivotal part in the moon landing. Radar technician Evan Johnson and his colleagues stare at a grainy screen, transfixed, as Armstrong takes that first small step.
I was in my cage, of course, unheard, underestimated, biscuit crumbs on my beak. But fate is a curious thing. For just as Evan's story is about to end, my story prepares to take flight.

Story
Macbeth: A Novel brings the intricacy and grit of the historical thriller to Shakespeare’s tale of political intrigue, treachery, and murder. In this full-length novel written exclusively for audio, authors A. J. Hartley and David Hewson rethink literature’s most infamous married couple, grounding them in a medieval Scotland whose military and political upheavals are as stark and dramatic as the landscape in which they are played.

Beasts in My Belfry is the wonderfully funny memoir about Gerald Durrell's time at Whipsnade Zoo and his experiences as a young zookeeper. Following the Second World War, Durrell joined Whipsnade Zoo as a junior keeper - an opportunity that fulfilled a lifelong dream. Thanks to Rupert Degas's brilliant voicing, which captures all of Durrell's charm and wit, the listener can enjoy being taken behind the scenes of one of the world's very first zoos. This is a delightful portrait of the animals who lived there and those who looked after them.

When she was five, tragedy prompted her parents to join Kabbalah, a cult-like sect of Judaism. They immersed themselves in it unreservedly–from its peculiar rituals (rolling in the snow naked to purify their sins) to the beauty of belonging to something greater than themselves. She left at eighteen–after years of abuse and living in communes in three countries–devastated and isolated, searching for meaning in her life. Today, that woman is Professor Debbie Haski-Leventhal, who specialises in finding meaning in our personal and professional lives.

Laughter for all from all the characters :-)
Watched this series on television at a young age,
and listening to the book 45 years later was fun ear candy.
So very reflective of a time, place and pace before
tourists became truly ignorant and offensive to a foreign
country’s citizens.
Lovely lively learning :-)

One of the most enjoyable books ever
A great performance of one of the most delightful, colourful, and entertaining books ever written. The style is hilarious, caricatured and deeply beautiful. Worthy of repeated listenings, grinning, chortling and guffawing every few minutes, interspersed with misty-eyed periods of tranquility and appreciation. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

Language and more language
Nothing really happens in this book. The Durrells leave England and some years later they return. In between they live, first alongside and then with and among, the richly colourful people and animals of Corfu island. The book is a set of discrete stories of their everyday lives. At once uneventful as well as full of the gusto and plainness of family life. Nothing really ever happens. And at the same time everything happens. Throughout the descriptive prose is sublime.
