Klara, Tochter von Tischlermeister Anton, soll eine Vernunftehe mit dem Kassierer Leonhard eingehen, liebt diesen jedoch nicht. Klara wird schwanger, hat jedoch Angst dies ihrem Vater mitzuteilen, da ein uneheliches Kind Schande über die Familie bringen und ihren Vater zum Suizid verleiten würde. Leonhard sagt sich aufgrund einer falschen Behauptung Klaras Bruder Karl betreffend von Klara los und macht der Tochter des Bürgermeisters einen Heiratsantrag. Klara fasst den Mut und geht zu Leonhard, um ihm ihre Schwangerschaft mitzuteilen und ihn um eine baldige Hochzeit zu bitten. Nachdem dieser kein Einsehen hat, begeht Klara Selbstmord.
