Many of us find ourselves stuck in unhealthy habits simply because we don't see a better way. With Mother Hunger, McDaniel helps women break the cycle of destructive behavior by taking a fresh look at childhood trauma and its lasting impact.

Story
In this culmination of his life’s work, Peter A. Levine draws on his broad experience as a clinician, a student of comparative brain research, a stress scientist and a keen observer of the naturalistic animal world to explain the nature and transformation of trauma in the body, brain and psyche. In an Unspoken Voice is based on the idea that trauma is neither a disease nor a disorder, but rather an injury caused by fright, helplessness and loss that can be healed by engaging our innate capacity to self-regulate high states of arousal and intense emotions.

Publisher's Summary
Most of us have a conversation we’re avoiding.
From the best-selling author of With the End in Mind, this is a book about the conversations that matter and how to have them better - more honestly, more confidently and without regret.
A child coming out to their parent. A family losing someone to terminal illness. A friend noticing the first signs of someone’s dementia. A careers advisor and a teenager with radically different perspectives.
There are moments when we must talk, listen and be there for one another. Why do we so often come away from those times feeling like we could have done more or should have been braver in the face of discomfort? Why do we skirt the conversations that might matter most?
By bringing together stories with a lifetime’s experience working in medicine and the newest psychology, Mannix offers lessons for how we can better speak our mind and help when others need to.

Critic Reviews
"This is a beautiful book. It gets to the heart of difficult conversation and consoling talk. I’m glad it will be in the world. Too often people want their friends and relations to take all the difficult talk to a therapist, there has to be more than the professional listeners who know how to have a mutually impactful beautiful, tender conversation. This is a book for everyone. You feel held by it. Kathryn is so on the button I actually feel listened to by reading it.... We all need meaningful connection in our lives, Kathryn guides us towards this." (Philippa Perry)
"Powerful, humane and wise." (Julia Samuel)
"Everyone should read it." (Nigella Lawson)

Best Advice on How to Listen with Care & Compassion.
Wow! Again Kathryn Mannix you've nailed it! Your words, endearing narration & tenderness in your person makes you highly qualified to share your thoughts, experiences & vulnerabilities.
Do find With The End In Mind to read/listen to as well, as I did first & then bought book & audible credit for Listen.
Today I concluded listening & the section on grief was particularly interesting & to hear Kathryn share her truth made it an even more engaging conversation. I was driving to Sydney to see my 97 yo Dad & I opened a conversation with him about his grief following Mum's death 14 years ago.
Thank you for the quality of care you share Kathryn.

So much more than the title implies
Listen is packed to the rafters with case studies, wisdom learnt, highly valuable advice on how to improve hospital's attitude towards all people. Kathryn Mannix doesn't tread on eggshells because she's been in the trenches. I can only hope she is heard and her words of advice acted on. Our community can be better, much better. I can't imagine no-one gaining something of value from this book.

A truly beautiful book .
This has been a thought provoking book which I believe should be read by not only individuals but organisations like councils and schools where community is a vital part of its offering.
I felt it bringing forth the need to trust. To step into this dance can be scary but is so important, but having this as a foundation will be a huge help. Thank you so much.

This is the author's second book and it is just as good as the first. There are so many lessons for life contained within these pages, delivered with compassion and sage wisdom. cannot wait for the next book.
