Lorsque ses collègues lui font remarquer l'usure de son manteau, pour la première fois, Akaki est sensible aux critiques mesquines et quotidiennes de son entourage, et il se met en tête d'économiser sou après sou pour s'offrir un nouvel habit. Quand il l'acquiert enfin, il est agressé, et son manteau volé. Il va alors tenter de se rebeller face aux événements, sans succès, et meurt de froid quelques jours plus tard. Alors son spectre hante les rues de Saint-Pétersbourg.
