Publisher's Summary

This is a self-help book like no other. Because you are not helping yourself, James Acaster is helping you.

When James quit all forms of social media in 2019, he felt like he'd been born anew, but he was worried he'd suffer withdrawal and get lured back online to compete in a never-ending popularity contest with only one possible winner (f--king Zuckerberg). He knew that in order to stay clean, he'd have to replace everything social media used to give him with three-dimensional real-life activities.

And so it was that James found ways to anonymously bully strangers, see photos of everyone's dogs, get invited to as many parties as possible, immediately know about all celebrity deaths, get public figures fired, argue with everybody about everything and so much more without even owning a phone (he painted over the screen of his old one to stop himself looking at Instagram).

His life is amazing and yours could be too if you buy James Acaster's Guide to Quitting Social Media, Being the Best You You Can Be and Saving Yourself from Loneliness Vol. 1.

Phenomenal

May this be the last online activity I ever partake in. Booked my ticket to Rhyl for tomorrow - see you all there.

Great book

Lots to laugh at, well edited and relatable stories. Glad it was less self help and more James jokes with some biography stuff too.

Brilliant

This was probably one of the funniest books I've ever listened to. I don't know what he's drinking, but some of the scenarios and details within those, are just hilarious. He's an excellent story-teller and it really is a book you can't stop listening to. I frequently found myself in a position where I needed to do something, but was so reluctant because I wanted to keep listening. I can't recommend it more highly, in fact, I started recommending it to people and I was only an hour in, it is that good.

Last review online before I go offline

Such a good book. Just gunna head off and insult all my family and ruin our friendships after this review and start my digital detox, offline journey. Thanks James.

Classic Acaster

I wondered if he was going to be able to keep this up for the whole 6.5 hours but he nailed it. If you like James’ stand up this is the best of it - clever puns (hey ma), ridiculous stories, and snarky observations on how we’re all idiots.

Oh, and please note this isn’t an actual self help book about getting off of social media. Although building a castle does sound like a great option.

Genius

Brilliant hilarious mix of allegory/metaphor about social media and is also kind of a parody self help book. I love James Acaster and I think I would've enjoyed this regardless of whether it was a serious book or not. but its not... its as mentioned an allegorical fictional story.

Classic Acaster

If you like his stand-up, particularly the more whimsical and surreal elements, then you'll probably enjoy this a lot. It suffers from the problem some of his other material does where it drags a little in the middle, but the final third is worth sticking around for.

It's as much a comment on how ludicrous behaviour on social media is when viewed from the outside, as it is an opportunity to create a very rich Pat Springleaf style world of bizarre characters and intertwining storylines.

I'm not sure it would work as well in print as it is all a lot funnier in Acaster's own voice, and he gives a great performance reading it. So much so that it works a bit like a very extended stand-up set.

Definitely get the audiobook for this one.
