Story
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

Story
Shortly before the Japanese invade, the van Hoorn family throws their famous Sinterklaas party at their tea plantation in West Java. One of their guests, Mattijs, a Dutch pilot, hopes to forge a future in the Dutch East Indies, possibly with the family's daughter Anna, but she is torn between her dreams of Holland and her desire to belong. Story
Katelyn smiles around at her husband and friends, gathered to celebrate her 36th birthday in their beautiful home decorated with fairy lights. But the next day Katelyn wakes up shaken and terrified in a hospital bed. She doesn’t remember the sweet taste of birthday cake icing, or how angry her best friend was at midnight, or the terrible things her husband said. She doesn’t remember the party at all. When she asks her husband what happened the night of the party he says "nothing". But her blood runs cold at the way his voice lilts slightly. The way it always does when he is lying.

Story
My hand trembles as I stare at the anonymous text. On this sunny Saturday morning, our twin ten-year-old boys were playing in the park just down our tree-lined street. But only one of them has come home… and it’s all my husband’s fault. I race to Leo’s study and demand answers. As his face turns white, I know: one of his affairs has turned deadly. I always smell the unfamiliar perfume on his shirt. I try to pretend we are a happy family, for the sake of the children… but now, my child is in terrible danger.

Publisher's Summary
All Frances wants is a cure for her daughter, but that would take a miracle, and miracles aren't something Frances believes in anymore.
Newly divorced from her pastor ex-husband and excommunicated from the church community she once worked within, she wrestles alone with the prognosis of her terminally ill child. Any suggestion of ‘divine intervention' is salt in the wound of her grief. So when Frances is forced to take in a homeless and pregnant teenage girl who claims to have had an immaculate conception, she's deeply challenged.
But sixteen-year-old Mary is not who she seems, and soon opens the door to perspectives that profoundly shift Frances's sense of reality, triggering a chain of astonishing events. It seems that where there is the greatest suffering lies an unexpected magic. Frances begins to hold hope for her family's future, but the miracle prayed for is not always the one received.
Immaculate is a provocative and tender exploration of loss, identity and healing, and the secret worlds we hide within in order to survive.

A beautiful and creative story about dealing with the loss of a child
There’s something about this book that reminds me of boys swallows universe in all the best ways. Annas narration is world-class and really brings the characters to life in a way that makes you lean in. A pretty spectacular debut

Refreshingly different
A beautiful story of the joys, struggles, and heartaches of life. Told in a refreshingly different way with a very satisfying ending. I plan to listen to this one again because there's too much in it to digest in just one read-through.

Beautiful, Wild, Cathartic & I loved the ride
Anna! Thank you for bringing Immaculate in to existence! I loved reading along to Immaculate while listening to it on Audible. It was the best of both worlds to be able to hear you tell this story and to see your words unfolding as I read. It was a cathartic read for me. I found it difficult to define where my sad tears ended and my happy tears began or was it my angry tears beginning and my tears of relief ending. Needless to say I just really loved the ride Immaculate took me on. It is a brilliant novel!

Brilliant
What a story teller! I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Wonderful characters and beautifully read by the author Anna McGahan. It felt at times like listening to a one-woman play. Can’t wait to see what she writes next. Highly recommended.
