The international number one best seller
In 1943 a bomber crashes into the Pacific Ocean. Against all odds, one young lieutenant survives. Louis Zamperini had already transformed himself from child delinquent to prodigious athlete, running in the Berlin Olympics. Now he must embark on one of the Second World War’s most extraordinary odysseys. Zamperini faces thousands of miles of open ocean on a failing raft. Beyond like only greater trials, in Japan’s prisoner-of-war camps.
Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini’s destiny, whether triumph or tragedy, depends on the strength of his will …
Now a major motion picture, directed by Angelina Jolie and starring Jack O’ Connell.

"Staggering.... mesmerizing.... Hillenbrand's writing is so ferociously cinematic, the events she describes so incredible, you don't dare take your eyes off the page" (People)
"One of the most remarkable survival tales ever recorded. Do yourself a favour and by the book" (Vanity Fair)
This story left me gaping, mouth open, as I listened to the life of this awesome inspiring man. I couldn't believe how interesting his life was even before the war impacted it. This book was so good that I'm already grumpy that nothing else can be as good and I'm already sad not to hear the gorgeous voice of Mr Herman tomorrow...so happy I heard this story and the narration took it to an even higher level.
To actually hear about events during world war 2 but not hear much about the Nazis and still be as shocked if not more by the things that happened just sums up how unbelievably moving this story is.
A MUST READ!!!
I was unaware of this book was put on to it when I was listening to Serial podcasts.
Loved listening to it in the car, at home when cooking and just relaxing. My children loved the story and always asked when I they were going to listen to this story. This story educated my family on the War and gave me a greater understanding to why my Grandparents were the people they were.
Would suggest this book to everyone of all ages
It was a beautiful experience. Now I'm going on the web after restraining myself with much difficulty, till I finished the audio book to see all the available information regarding the people and the events described in the story.
i couldnt stop listening. had me captivated!!! was so sad in some parts but really on the edge of your seat the whole way. i loved that it was a true story and how it included other bits of the war
"My first audio book"
A terrific story that made long car trips seem short. Thoroughly enjoyable. I am now hooked on listening to books.
"Best real life story I have read."
Absolutely fantastic. This story is so powerful. An excellent combination of joy, sadness and horror. But an awesome account of a man's struggle with everything that his life threw at him. What a man.
Excellent story. This book was interesting from the start. A fascinating account of a life previously unknown to me and of life in a Japanese POW camp.
An incredible story about an incredible man covering a remarkable period during and after WW2.
"Very good I enjoyed it"
It was an incredible story almost unbelievable a very good tale of survival and endurance
"what a guy"
ab amazing story of luck resilience and massive internal strength. I listened to book in 24 hours.
Could not stop playing it. Although at times you kept wondering if it could get any worse for Louis.
loved this book. story was addictive, listened at every opportunity!! was sorry it had to end
Great narration, great story. It holds the attention marvellously. One of the best tales I have ever heard.
"A true insight into the hidden reality of War."
Beautifully written with an expert hand that has no need to use graphic violent descriptions to show the true horror.
It is so, so very human. No one in this book, given the circumstances they were in EVER set out to be a Hero. Their sole goal was to protect each other and survive.
Brilliant! Unfortunately may narrators spoil a book for some listeners, Edward is not one of them.
I just listened in quite awe to the life story of one man, who was blessed to be loved and befriended by so many exceptional people, whom to which we should not only show thanks but be truly inspired and grateful.
I WISH,WISH,WISH that this, and all the other truly humanising accounts of war were part of the curriculum in the teaching of history. It is only with these true visualisations that any lessons may been learnt.
Really easy listening from start to finish. Gripped from the first chapter. Felt like crying half way through thinking things couldn't get any worse.....then they did!
The part when they were on the raft was gripping, heart breaking, uplifting and truly inspirational
This man went to hell and not quite back so many times in his life. To have survived all that he did shows amazing determination and strength of character.
