Publisher's Summary

I'm not the obvious choice to run Burlington's coolest wine bar - quiet, brooding, clueless about tannin content, and always one wrong turn away from another downward spiral.

But no one seems to mind that I'm a wreck. Besides me. I just focus on getting through each shift until the night a beautiful stranger appears, looking as lost and damaged as I feel.

When a mutual friend calls in a favor, the sexy newcomer winds up crashing on my couch. I don't know if it's his melodic Cornish accent, or his ocean blue eyes, or the rock-hard body with the mysterious scars, but I get the feeling whatever happened to him runs far deeper than those wounds.

Having Jax in my home makes my chest warm. Makes me shiver. Makes me want more. But I've got a pile of baggage and I don't want to be a burden on anyone let alone a man who seems to have enough demons of his own.

Our chemistry is off the charts. His arms feel like home. The last thing I want is to screw this up. Is it wrong to hope we can heal each other? Or will one of us die trying?

Contains mature themes.

Sweet story

These boys are so sweet, and the journey they go on separately and together is a pleasure to watch. I love the sense of family around them; the side-characters elevate the story to a 'love'.

.

Enjoyable listen but would have preferred one narrator as neither could do the others accent with the Cornish accent sounding Irish from Michael and the American one not too much better from Dan. Enjoyed all the English references and wording and laughed at the Wagin wheel reference, who knew they were an acquired taste ! ;)

Always a pleasure to read a new Garrett Leigh

Garrett Leigh gets better and better! Two taciturn guys, with shattering histories behind them, slowly build love and new lives between them. Excellent narrators who managed to really capture their characters. Enjoyed every moment - and bought a print copy as wellll!

An unexpected gem

A subdued yet rich tale of two complicated men discovering in each other the fortitude to acknowledge and confront, both individually and with each other, the scars of their traumas. Garrett Leigh's tackling of issues related to post-traumatic stress, anxiety, abandonment, codependency and self esteem were expertly navigated in Heartscape. All characters felt rich in personality. The chemistry between Jax and Tanner was raw and intuitive. Highly recommend Heartscape, especially for queer audiences dealing with ongoing mental health issues. Our relatable main characters are the driving force of the narrative, the sex scenes were (refreshingly) more infrequent and did not break the flow of the story being told or become repetitive. The intensity and desperation of the sex scenes also felt in-character for our MCs, acting as a vehicle for further communication between Tanner and Jax that complemented their guarded but volatile emotional states. Overall a surprising little gem with narration that I personally really enjoyed. A tactful handling of serious mental health issues and a conclusion that offered hope to our MCs without falling into the tropes of "sex will save us", or that love automatically solves everything.

Loved it.

Well read. Great Story. Relatable issues (PTSD). Great chemistry between characters.

More words needed but I'm feeling lazy.

Two broody, broken men find love.

Tanner is still finding his way as bar manager of Vino & Veritas after a traumatic time as a park ranger. Jax is from Cornwall but travels the world a wildlife cameraman. When a fire reduces most of Jax’s possessions to rubble, Tanner offers him a temporary place to stay and the two gruff, dour men find the mutual support they need. After the sweet and fluffy V&V opener, Featherbed, this was a welcome change of gears and one of the reasons I enjoy multi-author series. That said, I felt like Garret Leigh overloaded the angsty backstories of both men for no good reason and it gave the story a subdued and gloomy feel. I love a slow burn but somehow they formed an instabond that didn’t get acted on for ages. The bond didn’t feel real for two men so hurt by life - why not just let them slowly develop feelings and trust as they got to know each other? The audio didn’t help. I love dual narrations, they help me determine which character is speaking, but sometimes they jar. American Michael Dean (as Tanner) and Briton Dan Calley (as Jax) each handled their native accents well but not each other’s. Dan gave Jax a British regional accent, while Michael gave him an Irish lilt. Conversely, Michael gave Tanner a North American accent, while Dan gave him a southern drawl. I love both narrators but this was distracting. One narrator would have worked better.
