I listen to books to help keep my mind active when I'm on night shift. I mainly like to revisit all my favorites that I have read in print
This is the first time I have tried an educational book. I chose this one purely to help with life skills and communication with my work mates. I was surprised at how easy this was to listen to, the lecturer really held my attention throughout. Each lecture has an acted dramatization, and the characters progressed as the key points in the lectures where applied to their conflict. This made it easy to hold my attention, as (like any good book) I wanted to know how the stories ended. I will definitely listen to this again, and can already think of situations in my own life where I can apply this information. Also, this book comes with a 100+ page PDF file with lecture notes. Happy listener :)
I thoroughly enjoyed this course. The lecturer is an excellent narrator and sounds very empathetic and understanding. He breaks down the topic into very logical lectures, each focused around very useable frameworks. He frequently references outside studies, but doesn't get bogged down in the details, making it relate to the issue at hand. There are some dramatic enactments of examples which are sometimes cheesy, but overall add to the course. This audiobook is good from start to finish (arguably getting better as it goes), rather than many books, where it's one good idea re-hashed 50 times.
"Delivers what it promises"
The course is slightly long and some real life examples are in my opinion a bit unrealistic. These are maybe the only flaws in this otherwise excellent course. The narrator is very good and delivers his points in a way that's easy to remember.
I definitely recommend these lectures.
"Everyone should listen"
This has been a very enlightening coarse. Lots of insight into working through conflicts and how to handle them gracefully. I wish I had listened to this years ago.
"Very interesting and valuable information."
I absolutely loved this lecture. It was frank and jam packed with extremely valuable information. I found the lecturer's habit of summing up really helpful.
** My only quibble is that there were no accompanying materials. It would have been great to have a synopsis of the key topics and at least a few key points for each topic. And it was disappointing not to have one. **
I, like most folks I imagine, listened to these lectures while driving and could not make notes. And as this is a 12+ hour lecture series, it is not practical for me to sit down at a desk to re-listening and make notes. Truth be told, I would really rather not have to do this at all. I'd rather the publisher did it for me.
Since the lecturer covered a lot of fascinating points and was not shy to summarize them for us, why, Great Courses, could you not provide your clients a written summary? Please re-consider.
This was my "backup book" for a long time. That's what I keep on my player for the times when I need a break from the story I'm *really* listening to, or when I get caught away from the computer with nothing else on hand.
The first few hours are very basic information. Nothing new, and a little boring. Still worth listening to just to refresh yourself. Since I usually reversed 30 minutes or so every time I listened, I didn't get very far into the series.
Then I hit Lecture 7. Things started to get very, very interesting. This is where it goes beyond the usual business book advice. It gets practical. And enlightening. And gut-punching. There are points where I think, "I do that! Why do I do that? When did I start doing that? How can I stop?"
The illustrations (audio clips) are contrived and overacted and cheesy. The format (introduction of each lecture and applause at the end) gets tedious. But a little fast-forward solves that problem.
I think this will stay my backup book for a long time to come.
"Very useful, practical and simple"
Well structured and presented. Immediately relates to daily situations and offers great advice. Presented with passion and experience, highly recommended.
"Excellent Course. Will re-listen."
This was very informative, useful content to manage conflicts in my marriage, as well as in my work environment.
The pacing of the narrator was excellent. It made for an easy and attentive listen.
"A 2nd and 3rd listening should be mandatory!"
Well paced and easy to listen to. Highly recommend to others! Great information from Michael Dues.
I learned lessons throughout this book that will help my professional and person life. I can't say enough about how well this book is written and presented. The role playing sessions were great.
The course is fantastic. It can really help everybody, all the time. It is completely worth it.
"Clear, comprehensive and practical"
This is a topic I work with quite a lot and I was looking for something that got its arms around the subject as a whole. Prof Dues delivers a very clear and helpful overview of the subject with practical tips about how to put the lessons to work, examples from his own work which bring the theories to life and short dramatic illustrations of concepts to life. Despite its length my attention never flagged because his delivery is excellent and there are so many useful theories and tactics on offer throughout. My personal highlight is the section dealing with the interplay of goals relating to topic, relationship, identity and process which form a major part of all conflicts but there are plenty more. I was primarily interested in this from a work perspective but the lectures also deal with personal relationships and raising kids to be effective at conflict management in their own lives.
Very highly recommended
Everyone should read this book, especially if you are in management or leadership. I have learnt so much that will benefit both my personal life & work life. I have already recommended this book to my husband, three colleagues, a friend and I will continue to recommend it. Thank you Michael for writing such a wonderful book it has changed my life.
"extremely detailed & in depth training on conflict"
highly recommend has really opened my eyes into how to resolve conflict going forth. essential reading
Excellent and interesting view of a completely new topic for me. Much to think about and apply in life and work. Great lecturer.
"Nicely structured, logical progression."
With a friendly and appealing tone, Prof Dues structures his 35 years of wisdom into really pleasurable listening. I enjoyed walking into town while listening to one or more lectures then taking the time to note what I would like to pass on to my teams and others. Good summaries too after each one reminding us of the say, say, say structure and how effective that is.
Prof Dues sets a good example.
Very well structured and supported by dramatized examples that help understand how to apply the guidance provided. I warmly recommend it because it simply explains easy to follow guidance to be better at approaching conflicts at home or work. It's not theoretical it's practical. Many thanks to Professor Dues
"fantastic listen highly recommend"
outstanding read / listen. I have reccomended it to many of my learners already.
"Well worth listening to"
I usually listen to courses based more around physics - this is new territory for me. I found it surprisingly compelling listening.
I haven't really listened to any other books of this genre.
The delivery was comfortable and well-paced, with a good mix of advice and anecdotes.
I would recommend this to anyone, even if they are not into the 'softer' sciences.
"I would recommend it!!"
overall loved it and will apply it in daily life. some parts were not particularly relevant but it did not take anything away from the overall experience
Excellent lectures, not just for students. We all need to participate in improved conflict communications. This is the way to a better future.
