You can acquire optimism and significantly improve your life! Are you an optimist or a pessimist? How often do you take on exciting new projects or celebrate your successes? Now psychologist Martin E.P. Seligman, one of the world's experts on motivation, shows you how to chart a new approach to living with "flexible optimism." Dr. Seligman's principles of reasoned, flexible optimism will help you rise above pessimism and the depression that accompanies negative thoughts.
Learned Optimism shows you how to:

If you really want to get into this book/subject, best to get the hardcopy as it refers to some 'exercises' that need to be done prior to continuing. Rather pointless if you don't have the extra papers they refer to.
"I ve found the test online"
I have been optimistic and thought the test should be somewhere online :) I ve found it here: www.stanford.edu/class/msande271/onlinetools/LearnedOpt.html
"Good Advice Clearly Stated"
The author narrates this audio in a comfortable and gentle style. Dr. Seligman has condensed the insight of many years of study and experience into a short presentation. He stays on topic and does not resort to jargon or obscure scientific theorizing. If you will use the test (available free using the link on this page) and listen with an open heart and mind to his message, Dr. Seligman can help you develop a more hope filled optimistic lifestyle.
"Outdated audiobook..... try Covey instead!"
I am a big fan of Martin Seligman and the field of Positive Psychology. Having read the excellent "Authentic Happiness" by Seligman, I decided to give "Learned Optimism" a try on audiobook. Not very happy with what was offered here. This is a 1991 release, all of the material is also covered in "Authentic Happiness". Also, when you are listening to audiobooks in the car like I do, scoring the optimism test while driving is not going to work!
As an advice to prospective listeners: you are much better off downloading Stephen Covey's "Seven Habits" or a more recent Seligman release.
"Without booklet, not worth it"
This book was probably pretty good with the self-diagnostic survey, but without it, the first 30 minutes--of a 1.5 hour tape--are not so meaningful. I'm not even sure I should bother to listen to the rest. It was a waste of my book credit.
"What you should know."
I had not looked at how long the recording was before I downloaded it. I was under the impression that the whole book would be read. Really, it is an addition to the book that is from the author explaining how to determine if you were an optimist or a pessimist. This would not be a suitable download if you are wanting the whole book read to you.
Easy pace. Easy to understand and follow.
I would have really liked to have the whole book read to me.
"Booklet is available on Audible"
One of the main complaints mentioned by reviewer is that the test--mentioned in the first 20 minutes of the audiobook--isn't included. If you return to the book on Audible, though, you'll find the booklet available for download. So far, I'm finding the book insightful with plenty of examples AND scientific data for the skeptical.
"Waste of time"
No substantial information here. No research, no studies, etc. Just anecdotal fluff. This all hinges ob a theory that everyone dalls into one category or the other, so if you don't, you're still on your own figuring things out. Also quite dry.
If you have anxiety about a certain situation or tend to think on the negative side, I highly recommend this book. It has practical exercises that you can use to think of a problem with a better perspective.
"Learn the mechanics of optimism"
An enjoyable insight into the mechanics of optimism and how it relates to you specifically. Be sure to complete the survey before listening to the audiobook.
You need the workbook that comes with the "book", in order to LEARN OPTIMISM.
"I would give it a six if it wasn't abbreviated"
This is an excellent snapshot of how your explanatory style leads to positive or negative thinking. Comes complete with self-test booklet and with suggestions for overcoming negative thinking patterns by disputation and diversion tactics. Deserves to be in the top one. I was put off by shortness of download but it packs a lot in. I can't see why the full version is not available. Seligman IS the father of positive psychology, learned helplessness etc
"The test is available as a download in My Library"
There is a test required about 15 mins into the audiobook, designed to test your own levels of optimism. One reviewer claimed this was missing from the download, but it can be found as a PDF as part of your 'My Library' after purchasing the audiobook. You can also do the test online here (without even purchasing the audiobook) http://www.stanford.edu/class/msande271/onlinetools/LearnedOpt.html
"Concise, practical summary."
I struggled with the print version of this book first time around, and was encouraged to go back to it because of the accessibility of the audio version. It is one of only a few books I have listened back to frequently.
Seven Habits of Highly Effective People for its pragmatic examples of how to adopt a positive, pro-active attitude.
Littered with examples throughout.
One of warm encouragement.
A great, two hour refresher, even for those familiar with Seligman's work in positive psychology, of the mental toolkit available to help us live our best lives.
"Excellent. Exceeded expectations."
Strong advice about health happiness and success.
This book offers strong advice about health, happiness and success.
"Didn't have scorecard"
Love theory, advice and v interesting but audiobook talks about behaviour scorecard which can't see cod audio
"A Taster into the subject"
Very short book, gets interesting but over so quickly. Felt like a taster into a subject , that requires deeper training to break old habits.
"Good if you want practical exercises"
But if you generally want to learn more about positive psychology try Shaun achors books. The questionnaire was good though. A v short audio book!
"a really useful book"
i think this book will be a good read for anyone who wants to develop the way they think and how they deal with negative thoughts. nice and short but very practical!
"Useless as a download"
If you buy the CD then this may be a great audio book as the other review sugested, but as the whole thing is dependant upon you having the booklet which comes with the CD, the booklet which doesn't come with the download...
I could have found better ways to waste my money.
