"While the history books are filled with tales of obsessive visionary geniuses who remade the world in their images with sheer, almost irrational force, I've found that history is also made by individuals who fought their egos at every turn, who eschewed the spotlight, and who put their higher goals above their desire for recognition." This book has been a HUGE game changer for me!
I identified with so many things in here it's hard to nail down any one lesson that resonated the most.
Thank you for this amazing piece of work and I look forward to listening to The Obstacle Is The Way next.
Wish I finished year 12 so I could have a better understanding of all the big words used.
This book helped me realise how detrimental my ego has been in my life and would continue to be had I not listened to Ryan Holiday's wise words. It would be extremely difficult (if not impossible) to eradicate my ego, but thanks to this book, I can now identify where and how my ego hinders my life and thus gain control over it. I plan to listen to this book a couple more times and will probably continue to do so throughout my life. Thank you Mr. Holiday.
I am a 19 year old university student, I have found myself getting caught in my own head and re-reading the obstacle is the way and reading ego is the enemy have helped immensely! Definitely picking up in a great way where the obstacle is the way left off!
If English is your second language this book will be a bit of a challenge to listen but you can still get the point. I can suggest you listen to last chapter, which is the interview, first to get an idea about what is going on with the characters. Because if you are not born in America, I assume, you would not know these people. Maybe there were enough explanations but my English did not help me to grasp the full image as early as the book expected me. That was my challenge otherwise the insight I got from this book will remain with me. At least once per day there is a situation for me that I repeat it to myself: ego is the enemy! I can spot it and try to prevent it for good 😊 a deeper level of awareness.
Ryan Holidays stoic lessons are fantastic. I have learned so much about myself I haven't realised including why I need to stay on my chosen life path. A life altering book.
Thank you Ryan and Tim Ferriss for introducing me to this ancient mind hack for a greater life.
A wonderful companion to the obstacle is the way. While at times it almost seems self deprecating in it's nature, it delivers wonderfully salient points that we need to remember. Very enjoyable and thought provoking.
"Disappointing. Thin, weak reading."
I bought this book a rather strong recommendation by Tim Ferris. Tim went down in my estimation with this glorified essay. The content is thin, the point is obvious.
There seems to be a trend at the moment in taking classic knowledge (Ancient Roman / Greek) and rehashing if for anxious West Coast / Bay Area types. This book makes you feel a little bit embarrassed for the author.
Ego is the Enemy...could have been a one pager on a blog.
This is a case of networked buddies ( Tim F etc) all doing each other a favor ...
Ryan certainly has an audience. The sheer number of positive reviews on here swayed me.
I'll be more careful in future.
Word of warning on narration.
Ryan did a selfie on narration.
It's terribly self conscious and adds to the hollowness of the content.
His pronouncing of the word 'naivety' made me wince...
Hope you enjoy. I had to stop half way through...
it took time to get used to the voice. I would have preferred another narrator.
I love the way this book was broken down. Great quotes and examples by a thoughtful, articulate author who staves off hubris. Essentially it's nice to get helpful examples on life improvement from someone who gets it, but still stumbles. Great stuff. Audio extra w Tim Ferris was a great addition. Well worth the credit.
"2 words... A Mazing"
I've already listened to it twice, I have the hardcover and I'm going to listen it again and again over the years. The lessons in this book are in the forefront of my mind and I've already seen errors in my thinking and decisions based in satisfying ego and have made corrections
If you have an open mind, get this book!
If you have a strong ego, you need this book but it will do nothing for you. I hope you prove me wrong
"CREDIT WORTHY: Will stand the test of time!"
I bought both. Audio for first quick listen. Print to re-read and underline.
The writing is so tight - illustrations so curated - and principles so universal that I think of the author as a modern day philosopher, that people actually care to read.
This book is UNIQUE among others on the topic, but...
I compare this AUTHOR to: Tim Ferriss, Seth Godin, Adam Grant, Robert Greene and Stephen Pressfield.
After listening to Ryan narrate "The Obstacle Is The Way" his voice really brings it to life in a unique way. I loved "Ego" for the same reason.
I like how his super young voice sounds reading his super-wise words.
Defined Ego in a fresh way and demonstrated how it has held back people throughout the ages. It gave me hope that Ego can be overcome and showed success stories of those who did just that.
"Easy on the ears, hard on the head"
It's a short and tasteful listen.
Ryan's clear pronunciation and calm demeanor make this a very relaxing audiobook. Ryan has the ability to painstakingly break down very complex ideas to the point where I can understand them. With that being said, Ryan's book will certainly cause me to reevaluate many of the actions I have taken in the past while simultaneously making me take a second look at the actions I take moving forward.
This is not a self help book, as Ryan states in the start of the book, but the values and morals behind this audiobook certainly lends ideas that can be directly applied to your everyday life, similar to a self help book.
Thank you Ryan for such a great experience.
"depressing and inspirational at the same time"
Ryan holiday tells you like it is whether you want to hear it or not. In this book he accurately, through storytelling and examples, tells us how we sometimes are our worst enemies when we can not realize truth. Ego can be dangerous and this book does a great job of presenting why to be wary.
"belief in the indestructible self is destructive"
this book provides an amazing array of anecdotes and advice for pushing ego aside in favor of a dispassionate view of reality. our society parts us on the back so much that we all believe we are the best, and we kill ourselves getting to prove it. instead, take a step back and realize how much you still need to grow, and take the time to do the growing.
"must read. must. read. must. read."
humility is key, and envy is thy enemy. the amount of motivation and inspiration was unfathomable. I want more and more until I won't have to read to this book to keep my ego straight.
This is a well written and narrated book that every young professional should read. The author uses both historical and modern day examples to reinforce ideas that contradict what is betrayed in the media. I plan to pickup the print copy as well.
"Succinct and profound"
Ryan has done an awesome job of curating and interpreting some of history's greatest lessons in a series of digestible anecdotes.
Highly recommended reading/listening for anybody looking for guidance in a professional or personal capacity.
Very sobering book. Wise and real. Can't recommend it enough especially for self help junkies!
"Ego will start being my friend"
Incredible journey through my ego! He still talks sometimes but practicing what's on this book makes us more aware and eventually happier. Great listen!
loved hearing this book..it came at perfect timing in my life and it was refreshing to hear some real core truths about 'success' or what ever that means to you personally
"Falls well short...."
Ryan Holiday should not have written this book. I don't mean that harshly either. He is a very good author and narrator. I just got the feeling that he was just trying to keep momentum going and his name out there, after having published ''The Obstacle is the Way'' - which I listen to every month! There is nothing new or exciting to discover in this book.
The title is misleading to a degree - it is mostly about the author trying to destroy his ego by showing the reader that he has one - and it isn't that small either.
Obstacle is the Way - I listen to it every month....
If you loved The Obstacle is the Way - then this book will disappoint you.
A great read.
Our ego is a personal challenge for us all. Shaping and sculpting the way in which we think and choose to act.
This is a awesome book on how to deal with this force in your mind.
I've suggested it to many. And as such I'd do the same to you.
Good luck and crush it!
"Don't be put off by the title!"
I was initially put off Ryan's book due to the title - I think it can be very counter productive to wage a war against aspects of our psychology and framing them as the enemy. I think it's better to see them as fragmented sick parts which need healing. However once I got into this book it was absolutely amazing. I've been doing self work for some time but this book exposed egoic patterns I had previously been unaware of running in myself and for this reason was an uncomfortable read at times but so worth it. I loved Ryan's previous book 'The Obstacle is the Way' which is equally amazing and helpful (I recently re-read this to help me through some big changes at my job - I even got additional copies to hand to colleagues to help them with this). I'm very excited to see what Ryan comes up with next and wouldn't hesitate to recommend either of these books to anyone who is interested in living a fuller, more rewarding, and relaxing life.
"Some good stuff but..."
Lots of quotes and personal stories, but really nothing practical for the reader to deal with our ever present egos...
I liked it because it gives you a different perspective on ego must read this book
Loved it. I finished it in few days as it's super interesting to understand that biggest enemy sitting within oneself. Ego is the derailer.
