Publisher's Summary

James Allen's From Poverty to Power (1901) and As a Man Thinketh (1902) stand as seminal texts in the self-help genre that have served as sources of inspiration since their publication at the beginning of the 20th century. Loosely based in its principles around the Biblical proverb "As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he," As a Man Thinketh asserts the powerful idea that belief is central to bringing about positive events in one's life. From Poverty to Power, Allen's first book, relies on a similar philosophy but addresses themes of adversity and suffering more directly and offers his simple wisdom as a means of overcoming difficulty. Allen's writings are powerful and relevant today as they were over a century ago, and this collection brings their solace and inspiration to modern listeners.

"Old school wording though relevant concepts"

Obviously a brilliant and enlightened mind, especially for the time it was written. A bit heavy going at times with the old school wording and terminology, though the message is relevant today as much as ever.
Note: This is two books recorded back to back. I prefered the first (As a Man Thinketh).

    "great book bad performance"
If you could sum up As a Man Thinketh and From Poverty to Power in three words, what would they be?

The narrator seemed to be racing to finish reading this great book. Unlistenable.

    Story
"Good concepts, better without religion focus"
Is there anything you would change about this book?

Great concepts, and philosophy, reminders, much more... much of this we've lost in today's self-focused society... Remove the religious focus (which in and of itself is contrary to the individualism focus proposed) and there's more palatable value

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

remove religious focus...which in and of itself is contrary to the individualism focus proposed

"A mind is a terrible thing to waste!"

This book encourages thinking which leads to being able to make positive changes in one's life. Thinking freely, and accurately is very necessary because a mind is a terrible thing to waste.

What the world needs to hear, absorb, act, and live on! If we all became centered in ourselves, take responsibility for our feelings/outcomes and act truly unselfishly .. What a difference we all could make.

"This book could change your life"

James Allen was clearly a man of knowledge. This book has the potential to change your life if your take its message to heart. And this message is timeless, as relevant today, if not more so, than when James Allen wrote it over 100 years ago.
