A hands-on, practical survival guide from retired Navy SEAL Clint Emerson - adapted for civilians from actual special forces operations - to eluding pursuers, evading capture, and surviving any dangerous situation.
In today's increasingly dangerous world, threats to your personal safety are everywhere. From acts of terror to mass shootings, and from the unseen (and sometimes virtual) matrix of everyday crime, danger is no longer confined to dark alleys or unstable regions. Potentially life-threatening circumstances can arise anywhere, anytime, and Clint Emerson - former Navy SEAL - wants you to be prepared.
100 Deadly Skills contains proven self-defense skills, evasion tactics, and immobilizing maneuvers - modified from the world of black ops - to help you take action in numerous "worst case" scenarios from escaping a locked trunk to making an improvised Taser to tricking facial recognition software. With easy-to-understand instructions, Emerson outlines in detail many life-saving strategies and teaches you how to think and act like a member of the special forces.
This complete course in survival teaches you how to prevent tracking, evade a kidnapping, elude an active shooter, rappel down the side of a building, immobilize a bad guy, protect yourself against cybercriminals, and much more - all using low-tech to no-tech methods. Clear, detailed, and presented in an easy-to-understand and execute format, 100 Deadly Skills is an invaluable resource. Because let's face it, when danger is imminent, you don't have time for complicated instructions.

Missing a PDF with all images, to illustrate each topic and technic. It was hard to picture everything, specially as an audiobook.
"Only a small fraction of the information is useful"
The synopsis of the book claims it is geared towards helping regular civilians be able to survive any dangerous situation. However, about 80% of the book is about skills that are valuable only if you are actually a clandestine operative of some kind. While I like to imagine I am James Bond sometimes, I'm really just an average guy. Skill: learn how to jump out of a moving helicopter into water in order to gain access to a foreign county.... yeah, probably not going to do that next time I go on vacation. Skill: burn a body in a barrel of jet fuel.... ummmm. The book is a fun listen if you like learning about spy stuff, but there is not to much to be gained in terms of actual real world information for civilians looking to be prepared to survive an emergency situation.
"Better with pictures"
This is a book that doesn't lend itself to audiobook
The print version has many diagrams and drawings! How can you teach how to tie a knot with words and no pictures?
"A Mere Laundry List of To-do's"
I didn't expect a whole lot for a $10 Audible book, but even so I feel somewhat disappointed. Think of it as a list of items for you to research completely on your own. If you're OK with that, then this will serve as a good guide for much more study.
For example, it simply tells you to "buy two rare earth magnets to use as an improvised compass". It's up to you to figure out where to buy said magnets and how to make and use the compass.
For my part, I'd rather this book be divided into ten volumes of 10 skills each, with much more how-to detail (audio, plus downloadable PDF's with illustrations). A multi-volume series could have been a great cottage industry for the author who, I'm sure, is very qualified. Instead, it comes across as a slapdash, make-a-quick-buck affair.
"Great information, but get the paperback."
Great information for anyone looking to better prepare themselves for the dangers that the world has to offer. However I'd strongly recommend the paperback or kindle edition of this book. The audio book is we'll narrated and still very informative, however it doesn't have the well done, detailed, and at times necessary illustrations for mastering these skills. Be vigilant, be prepared and good luck out there.
"How to trick facial recognition software?"
Put a baseball cap on... really? Nonsense from start to finish,Tom Clancy and Co. reveal way more stuff in their fictional books than this one.
"Good for a laugh"
No deadly fighting tactics. Advice such as you can hide things in your anal cavity.
"interesting practical info...but buy physical book"
I listened to this quickly, but written with diagrams is probably more useful.
I liked the author's 2 sided approach. Each lesson has an "operator" approach which is rarely something that an everyday person would find useful. Then the "civilian" approach which was smart "oh shit" scenario knowledge.
I found very little to be humorous. I think if you can find humor in the scenarios posed, you live a sheltered existence. I will say that some of the "civilian" takeaways were a bit of a stretch given the lesson. Even in those, the knowledge that a hostile "operator" will behave in such a manner is valuable.
in short, highly recommend this book. I do suggest the hardcopy though. i plan on buying it myself at some point.
No. For riding in the car and time constraints audio better but many illustrations are needed to see what the reading is describing. I have both.
He reads well.
Many. Thinking outside the box to survive.
"not what I thought"
the book was not what I thought it would be. but it was ok. ok
"Nice info for numerous reasons"
Great perspective. Loved all different subjects covered in the book. Shows what to work on with some incite.
"Could have been so much better"
You would need to be a serious Jason Bourne wannabe with a mental health problem to use most of the material in this book. As if a civilian is going to conceal a weapon up their arse just in case they might need it. As a civilian 99.9999% of our lives are peaceful, so this type of advice is useless.
More real world practical advice of what someone with his training would do if they were attacked in the street or a bar, or if they encounter a burglar in their house, or they get caught up in a riot or terrorist attack would have been great.
Most of it.
There's an opportunity for someone with Clint's skills and training to impart more realistic and practical advice to civilians, that's what I was hoping for.
